CHURCH TOURNEY
Crenshaw High School will be the site for an interdenominational basketball tournament Feb. 20.

The “Throwing Down in the Community Youth and Young People Church Invitational Basketball Tournament,” featuring a number of local churches, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $125 per team.

Bryant Temple AME Church, Zion Baptist Evangelistic Temple Church, Bethel AME Church in L.A., Second AME Church, New Philadelphia AME Church, Ward AME Church, Price AME Church, Brookins AME Church and Weller Street Baptist Church are local participating churches. The only team from outside the L.A. area is St. Paul AME Church in San Bernardino.

CIF-SS RANKINGS
In this week’s CIF Southern Section boys basketball polls, Montebello High School is sixth in Division I-AA and Leuzinger is No. 3 in I-A.

In II-AA, Compton is seventh and Keppel is third in II-A. In III-A, Serra is No. 1 and Centennial is No. 3. Price tops the IV-AA poll, Cathedral is third and Inglewood fourth.

In girls basketball, Lynwood is ninth and Warren 10th in I-AA. Inglewood is second in III-AA and Centennial is sixth in IV-AA. Serra and St. Paul are one-two in V-AA. St. Bernard is No. 1 in VI-AA.

In boys soccer, Bell Gardens is seventh in Division 2, Norwalk is sixth and Cathedral eighth in Division 4, Animo Leadership is third and Salesian fourth in Division 5.

In girls water polo, Montebello is fifth in Division 2, while Downey tops the Division 7 poll. Cerritos is second and Warren fourth.

GARICIA HONORED
Cal State Dominguez Hills outfielder Katie Garcia and freshman teammate Lauren Harper are the California Collegiate Athletic Association softball player and pitcher of the week, respectively.

Garcia, a senior from Riverside was perfect during the opening weekend of play at the rain-shortened Mizuno Best of the West Invitational. In two games against Davis & Elkins and Central Washington, Garcia reached base in all six plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. She also reached base twice on a hit-by-pitch.

Harper, a San Diego native, went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two outings during the Mizuno Invitational.  In 10 innings, she allowed eight hits, walked four and struck out eight.

The Toros host Humboldt State Thursday in the conference opener for both teams.

HELP FOR HAITI
The Challengers Boys & Girls  Club of South L.A. will have a fund-raising basketball game at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 26 to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

The “Hoops 4 Haiti” game between the Challengers all-star team and Inner City Education Foundation teachers is open to the public at the club, located at 5029 S. Vermont Ave. An admission fee will be charged.

“Hoops 4 Haiti” t-shirts will be available for purchase at the event.

Other fundraising events include a baked goods sale, movie night and basketball free-throw shooting contest.

COOK’S WEEK
Carson resident April Cook, a sophomore guard at Washngton State, is the Pac-10 women’s basketball player of the week.

Cook, a Long Beach Poly High grad, scored a career-high 33 points against Arizona State Saturday to lead the Cougars to their first conference win.
