Crenshaw High School began the season with a loss to Washington Prep. If it wants to avoid seeing its season end with another loss to the Generals it will have to get past the No. 2 seed Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the City Section Division I girls basketball playoffs.

The Cougars (19-8) defeated visiting Westchester, 46-30 Thursday in a first-round game to advance. Washington Prep (21-10), which opened the season with a 60-57 victory over Crenshaw on a last-second shot, routed Kennedy, 68-33 in its playoff opener.

The quarterfinal game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Washington Prep.

It’s simple, in the view of Crenshaw coach Andre Evans what it will take to reverse the first result.

“We’re going to have to rebound better,” he said.

That means dealing with the Generals’ 6-3 center Reshanda Gray, who is averaging 16.5 rebounds per game.

Crenshaw has size of its own in 6-2 center Tierra Robinson, one of the top shot blockers and rebounders in the section. Despite foul trouble Thursday, she pulled down 15 rebounds while dealing with Westchester center Adijat Adams (19 points, 10 rebounds).

Thursday, neither Crenshaw or Westchester shot the ball particularly well. The Comets (14-12) really hurt themselves at the free throw line where they were 8-for-26 (30.8 percent).

Crenshaw was only better by comparison, hitting 12 of 23 (52.2 percent).

The Cougars also had more scoring balance, led by point guard Samone Kelley’s 13 points. Diinan Young and Andrea Edwards scored seven points each and Ahjaleah Price added six.

“We survived tonight,” Evans said. “We played just well enough. The girls had senior night last night and were out skating until 9 p.m., so they didn’t have their legs, which effected their shooting.”
