Cantwell rolls in playoff opener

Cantwell Sacred Heart High School made quick work of Viewpoint Thursday in the first round of the Southern Section Division 5AA girls basketball playoffs.

The fifth-seeded Cardinals (19-8) raced to leads of 19-4 after one quarter and 37-8 by halftime and never looked back against the Liberty League at-large team.

Bianca Ortega scored 11 points and Jacqueline Huerta had 11 points and five steals to lead the way.

Also contributing were Jordan Santiago (eight points, nine rebounds), Patricia Luna (eight points, seven assists) and Priscilla Rodriguez (eight points).

Cantwell earned a second-round game at Brentwood at 7 p.m. Saturday. Brentwood advanced with a 64-36 victory over Animo Leadership of Inglewood.

In the Division IAA playoffs, Almont League champion Alhambra (22-4) defeated Los Osos, 64-54 to earn a second-round game at Long Beach Poly Saturday. Poly, the fourth-ranked team in the state, opened the playoffs with a 72-23 rout of Aliso Niguel.

Poly (23-2) has won four consecutive State Division I titles.

Warren defeated Schurr, 65-48 as Danielle Rodriguez had 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to lead the Bears (23-5) to victory. Frances Vaaulu added 18 points and 16 rebounds.

Schurr finishes 14-12.

In the Division 2A playoffs, Alexandria Lewis scored 18 points to lead Culver City past Keppel, 58-40.

Culver City (17-12) now travels to top-seeded Mater Dei Saturday for a second-round game. Keppel finishes at 12-15.
