Warren girls edged in second round

A trip to the quarterfinals seemed securely in the grasp of the Warren High School girls basketball team with about six minutes left.

The host Bears held a 10-point lead over Long Beach Jordan with about six remaining of the Southern Section Division IAA second-round game Saturday.

But the second-place team from the Moore League began whittling away at the advantage and rallied to edge Warren, 55-53.

India Burke’s two free throws with one minute left gave the Panthers (22-7) a 54-52 lead they would hold the rest of the way.

Warren (23-6) cut the deficit to 54-53 when sophomore point guard Danielle Rodriguez hit one of two free throws with 47 seconds left.

But the Bears’ last chance passed when Rodriguez had her baseline jumper glance off the rim and was rebounded by Jordan. Burke (20 points) hit another free throw after being fouled with a second left  to account for the final margin.

Jordan, led by Burke and Danesha Long (16 points), was 9-for-10 from the foul line in the final period and 14-for-19 for the game.

Junior center Frances Vaaulu led Warren with 23 points and nine rebounds. Rodriguez had 10 points, four rebounds and three assists and Tahja Matthews, who hit a pair of 3-point  baskets in the third quarter, added eight points.

Jordan is at No. 2 Santiago Corona Wednesday in the quarters.

Colony 70, Inglewood 68
San Gabriel Valley League champion Lynwood (20-6) was ousted from the IAA playoffs by No. 7 Colony Saturday.

Tyonna Outland led Lynwood with 24 points and 17 rebounds. Kejuana Gardner had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Knights.

Colony faces top-seeded Long Beach Poly in the quarters. Winners of the last four State Division I titles, the Jackrabbits crushed Alhambra, 92-18 Saturday to advance.

Division 3AA
Inglewood 58, Torrance 52

No. 2 Inglewood let the better part of a 17-point second-half lead get away before holding on to defeat Torrance, 58-52 in the second round of the Division 3AA playoffs.

Deajanae Scurry led Inglewood (24-5) with 16 points 11 rebounds for the Sentinels, who saw their 50-33 lead shrivel to six points down the stretch.

Hazel Ramirez had six points, five assists and five steals for Inglewood. Camille Baker and Ryann Drear added six points each.

The Sentinels have a quarterfinal game at Jurupa Valley Wednesday.

Division 4AA
Alemany 71, Morningside 55

Morningside led, 20-17 after one quartr, but Alemany outscored the Monarchs (15-15) 45-16 over the next two quarters to win going away.

Deandrea Toler and Ashli Smith each scored 20 points for Morningside.

Tesha Stokes had nine points and 15 rebounds for the Monarchs.

Angelica Sahagun had 19 points for Alemany (19-7).

Division 5AA
Serra 66, Ontario Christian 23

Bria Richardson scored 18 points and added five assists and four steals to lead Serra (21-7) in the 5AA game. Danielle Muepo had 10 points and eight rebounds and Raven Gammage scored nine points for the Cavaliers.

Brentwood 54, Cantwell S.H. 44
Cantwell Sacred Heart's season ended Saturday with a 54-44 loss to Brentwood in the second round of the 5AA playoffs. Brentwood (10-17) advances to a quarterfinal game at  Santa Clara Wednesday, while the Cardinals see their season end at 19-9.


Division 6AA
St. Bernard 64, Rio Hondo Prep 25

Ajai Ford had 24 points, Taylor Heath added 13 as St. Bernard improved to 16-13 in the second-round game.

The Vikings are at Avalon Wednesday  in the quarters.
