Trade Tech women sixth seed in regionals

L.A. Trade Tech College has earned the No. 6 seed and a first-round home game for the South Regional women’s basketball tournament that gets under way this week.

The 18-team women’s competition began Wednesday with quarterfinal games between Santa Monica vs. Cypress and Santa Barbara vs. L.A. Southwest.

The Santa Monica-Cypress winner plays at No. 2 Ventura (29-1) Saturday. The Santa Barbara-Southwest winner moves on to face No. 1 Fullerton (28-1) Saturday.

Tech (22-3) hosts College of the Canyons (22-4) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Guard Niauni Brown, averaging better than 20 points per game, leads the way for Tech. Other key players are Heather Sutherland, Aja Miller and Malika Jones.

In the men’s regional, Trade Tech (14-8) was scheduled to host Santa Ana (12-14) Wednesday in a quarterfinal. The winner travels to No. 2 Citrus (26-2) Saturday for the semifinals.

Tipoff for all games is 7 p.m. If there is a doubleheader at one site, starting times are 5:30 and 7:30.
