Warren High School’s Damien Gomez leads a group of eight area athletes who have qualified for the State Wrestling Championships this weekend in Bakersfield.

The two-day meet at Rabobank Arena begins with the preliminary rounds at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The finals are at 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

By finishing among the top nine during last weekend’s Master’s Meet at Temecula Valley, Southern Section wrestlers were able to advance.

Gomez, by virtue of his second-place finish at 103 pounds, was the highest area finisher from the Master’s. He takes a record of 53-1 with 41 pins to Bakersfield after losing his first match of the year to Righetti’s Josh Rodriguez, 4-1 in the Master’s final.

Alhambra junior Hugo Perez has also qualified at 103 pounds after placing eighth.

Rosemead junior Matt Fregoso qualified at 119, Santa Fe senior Richard Rios at 125, Downey Calvary Chapel senior Bradford Gerl at 130 and Alhambra senior Abel Avila at 140. Fregoso was sixth, Rios fourth, Gerl fourth and Avila fourth at the Master’s. Gerl is making his second consecutive trip to state.

Paramount junior Antonio Lopez and Downey senior Rudy Calderon qualified at 215. Lopez was sixth and Calderon seventh at the Master’s.
