Some late-inning magic enabled the Cerritos College baseball team to pull out an 8-6 victory over Long Beach Tuesday in a South Coast Conference opener.

The Falcons, who host Mt. San Antonio at 2 p.m. Thursday, wiped out a 3-2 deficit by scoring five times in the eighth and once more in the ninth.

It was the third win in a row for Cerritos, now 5-7 on the season.

Even with an 8-3 lead, the Falcons held on for dear life as the Vikings (3-10) scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning and had a runner in scoring position when the game ended.

Sophomore starting pitcher Chris Villalobos (El Rancho High School) was looking for a complete-game win, but when he allowed three hits to start the ninth, freshman Christian Rodriguez (Norwalk) took over. After allowing a run-scoring double and sacrifice fly, Rodriguez recorded the final two outs to earn his second save for Villalobos (2-1).

Nick Gosano, Max McEleney, Tim Soonthangarun, Ralph Davis and Matt Palmer all had two hits for Cerritos. Gosano had two RBIs.

Softball
Freshman Natalie Garcia drew a bases loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in the game-winning run as the Cerritos College softball team defeated Mt. San Antonio, 3-2 Tuesday in a South Coast Conference softball game.

The Falcons are 19-3 overall and 6-0 in the SCC, while defending state  champion Mt. SAC is 7-3, 3-1. Cerritos hosts Pasadena City at 3 p.m. Thursday in conference play.

Hillary Perez-Ashley (15-0) allowed seven hits and struck out seven to notch the victory.
