As it did a week ago in the Southern Section Division V final, Salesian High School got the best of Animo Leadership Charter in the Southern Regional Division III boys soccer championship game.

The Mustangs capped a 23-5-2 season with a 2-0 victory Saturday at Downey’s Warren High. They defeated the school from Inglewood, 3-0 in the section final.

It took them until the 43rd minute to break a scoreless tie.

Then after Animo’s Jose Rosas was issued a red card for dragging down Salesian’s Jose Espinoza, Salesian scored on a breakaway by Zayas in the final minute with a man advantage.

Animo (26-7-2) played well in the first half and had some quality scoring opportunities, but Mustang goalkeeper Miguel Rodriguez turned them all away.

This was the third meeting this season between the two teams. Animo won the first, 1-0 Jan. 27.

Division I
Paramount 2, Dos Pueblos 0

Jose A. Salgado scored both goals and goalkeeper Tony Flores earned game MVP honors for his five saves to lead Paramount to a 2-0 victory over Dos Pueblos in the Division regional final.

The Pirates (27-6-3) scored in the 39th minute and the fifth minute of the second half to send Dos Pueblos (17-7-7) down to defeat.

It was the second consecutive shutout for Paramount, which was the third seed. Dos Pueblos was eighth.

Although my heart is with Salesian soccer I am very impressed with Animo's team. Similar to Salesian of years past, Animo has no field of their own but are loaded with talent. They are very skilled and well coached and I would like to one day see them win a CIF title. This year went to the very talented team of Salesian High and was very much deserved. If Divisions change I would like to one day sit on the Animo side and cheer on this small school with a great soccer program. The mutual respect between these schools was a great example of what CIF expects of all athletes. Congratulations to both schools.
