Seven-foot freshman center DeWayne Dedmon of Antelope Valley College has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at USC.

He will redshirt during the 2010-11 season.

“We are really excited that DeWayne decided to be a Trojan,” USC coach Kevin O’Neill said. “I think he has great potential, is an excellent student and is an even better person. He will be a huge part of our successes in the future. I can’t wait to coach him in January when he will enroll at USC which will allow him to learn our system and contribute to the program right away when he is eligible.”

Dedmon will complete one more semester at Antelope Valley, but will not play basketball so he will have three full seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2011-12 season.

In his one season at Antelope Valley, Dedmon averaged 6.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for a 17-14 team. He also had 46 blocks and tied the school record with seven blocks at Chaffey Jan. 22.

Dedmon had a season-best 15 points vs. Ventura Nov. 15 and had a season-high 14 rebounds against College of the Desert Dec. 11.

He broken a bone in his forehead and injured his nasal cavity when hit by an elbow against Victor Valley Jan. 27. The injury caused Dedmon to miss the final seven regular season games, but returned for the playoffs and grabbed 13 rebounds, while scoring five points in his first game back, a win over Miramar Feb. 24.

Dedmon didn’t play basketball until he was a senior at Lancaster High School.

He grew from 6-9 as a high school senior to 7-foot and 225 pounds the next year as a part-time student at Antelope Valley.

Dedmon had more than 20 scholarship offers.
