A portion of ticket sales from Saturday’s Garfield vs. Roosevelt alumni football game will go directly to help cover the medical expenses of an L.A. County sheriff’s deputy.

The game, organized by Alumni Football USA, kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at East L.A. College.

Mohamed Ahmed is the deputy who was injured during a shootout in East L.A. Jan. 11.

Ahmed has since been released from the hospital after undergoing facial reconstructive surgery but is expected to undergo more surgeries, according to Sheriff’s officials. Authorities also say Ahmed is the sole financial provider to his family, which prompted Alumni Football USA event coordinator Jarrod Hargrave to reach out.

“We care about and respect the communities we service, from the youth programs to the high schools to the local law enforcement and military,” Hargrave said. “Our founder is ex-military, and we’ve had many members of law enforcement participate in our games in the past, so it was a no-brainer to help out in any way we could.”

Alums from Garfield and Roosevelt high schools will partake in the first East L.A. Alumni Classic this Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at East Los Angeles College.

Tickets for each game are $10 at the gate and $5 for students with ID. Children 6 and under are admitted free.

Roosevelt alumni will participate in an Aztec war dance at 8 p.m., while Garfield alumni will hold a team dinner at 6 p.m. Friday.

Three other alumni football games will be held this week.

Schurr faces Montebello at 7 p.m. Friday at Montebello High in one alumni matchup.

Pioneer High in Whittier hosts two games Sunday.

At noon, it is California vs. Whittier and at 4 p.m., El Rancho and Santa Fe alumni collide.
