Salesian rides Vercher arm to victory

Quarterback Jihad Vercher varsity debut was  a smashing success.

The sophomore passed for 287 yards and four touchdowns to lead Salesian past Firebaugh, 42-0 Friday in the season football opener for both schools. He was 12-for-15.

Two of the scoring passes went to Christian Vega, who also scored on a run from scrimmage and totalled 123 yards running and receiving.

Brandon Foley carried 10 times for 100 yards and  a TD and Michael Lim caught a 24-yard scoring pass.

Defensively, Davon Moreland had four sacks and Lim had a pair of interceptions. Luvon Lucas had 10 tackles, four for loss.

The Mustangs play at Bishop Montgomery Friday. The Knights opened the season with a 43-0 win over Vista del Lago of Moreno Valley.

Bosco Tech trailed 31-0 through three quarters and lost to Westview of San Diego, 38-6 in its opener.

Dillon Welsh (9-for-21 for 133 yards) suffered a pair of interceptions for the Tigers.

Jonathan Silvas (nine carries, 63 yards) scored their lone TD.

Jeren Cuevas was the leading receiver with five for 85 yards.

Troy Campos threw scoring passes to Freddy Garcia and Daniel Moriel as El Rancho routed Los Altos, 41-0. Moriel added two TDs on the ground.

Josh Lopez ran for 105 yards and a TD on three carries and Andrew Romero had a scoring run for the Dons.

Ray Herrera (nine tackles) and Chris Castro (eight tackles, sack) paced the defense.

Gilberto Rivera (7-for-14) passed for 130 yards and a TD and Robert Lewis ran for 109 yards and two scores on 11 carries to lead South East past Eagle Rock, 35-0. The Jaguars led, 35-0 at the half.

Christopher Ochoa (11 carries, 59 yards) and John Belton (four catches, 75 yards) also contributed to the win.

Panorama rolled to a 32-13 victory over South Gate in nonleague action.

South Gate quarterback Emanuel Leyva was 15-for-27 for 201 yards and a TD and Ernesto Torres carried six times for 54 yards and  a score. Ricardo Estrada caught five passes for 62 yards and a score had an interception on defense.
