Serra High School, last year’s State Division III bowl champion, picked up where it left off with a convincing 34-7 victory at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame Friday.
The Cavaliers had all their offensive firepower on display, piling up 522 yards of total offense, getting a lot of it with big plays.
SMU-bound quarterback Conner Preston was 11-for-18 for 287 yards and three touchdowns and George Farmer caught four for 111 yards and a TD and Marqise Lee caught three for 144 and two scores.
Shaquille Richard added another 163 yards and a TD on the ground.
Defensively, David Maola had two sacks and Raymond Ford had six solo tackles.
Serra, the defending Southern Section Northwest Division champion, faces Redondo Friday.
Dons rally
Dominguez, which passed its first test with a 14-11 win over Crespi, faces another Friday when Bishop Amat (1-0) comes to town. The Lancers blanked Garfield, 23-0 in their opener.
Dominguez had to come from behind to defeat Crespi last week.
Trailing, 3-0, the Dons got 37- and 20-yard scoring runs from Stanley Taylor in the final quarter to take a 14-3 lead.
They had to play a good part of the game without starting quarterback Chris Brown, who was bothered by back spasms. Brown, who threw for 100 yards, is expected to return to the lineup Friday.
Monarchs fall
Morningside managed only 41 yards of total offense and dropped its opener by a score of 21-6 to San Fernando.
The running attack netted a minus-three yards, Gregory Adams and Asward Bradley combined for only 44 yards through the air.
Michael Garrison’s 82-yard kickoff return in the second quarter accounted for the only Monarch points.
Joshua Campbell was all over the place on defense with 11 solo tackles and 19 total. He also had an interception.
Tykeem Brown was in on 14 tackles (six solo) and had a sack.
Intra-city showdown
Compton, a 34-14 win over Monte Vista in its opener, visits Centennial Friday for city bragging rights. This will be the opener for the Apaches and Jimmy Nolan’s first game as their head coach.
Running back Roger Jones and quarterback Tremell Sneed each scored a pair of TDs in Compton’s opening-night victory.
Eagle runaway
Verbum Dei opened the season with a 54-12 thrashing of City Section school Animo South Los Angeles.
