BASKETBALL
Former NBA players Marques Johnson, Reggie Miller, Mark Jackson, Rick Fox and Pooh Richardson will play in a celebrity basketball game honoring the late UCLA coach John Wooden Saturday at the Hangar Athletic Xchange in Hawthorne.

The HAX Foundation is hosting the game, which has a 5 p.m. tipoff. Proceeds go towards scholarships for underprivileged youth.

Also expected to play are comedians Chris Spencer and Alex Thomas, actors Allen Payne, Pooch Hall, Wesley Jonathan, Kleo Thomas, Mike Warren and Chico Benymon, and rapper Warren G.

The Hangar is located  at 3202 Jack Northrop Ave.

FOOTBALL
Add UCLA free safety Rahim Moore to another watch list for national honors.

The Dorsey High School grad, who interception a nation-leading 10 passes a year ago for the Bruins, is one of 30 players on the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s player of the year award watch list.

The junior is also on the watch lists for the Thorpe Award, Lott Trophy and Nagurski Trophy.

Heading the Camp list is Alabama tailback Mark Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner.

BASKETBALL
The Fullcourt Press Lead Guards basketball camp is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The camp is designed to teach players in grades nine through 12 the fundamentals of the lead guard position.

BASEBALL
Dodgers farmhand Nick Akins has been named the Pioneer League player of the week for Aug. 2-8.

The Los Angeles native batted .550 (11 for 20) with three home runs and seven RBIs for that period.

Since being promoted to the Dodgers’ single-A Ogden club, the outfielder is hitting .384 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 20 games.

He was a 19th round draft pick of the Dodgers in 2009.

SPEED SHOOTING
A number of area residents are among the entries for the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships Aug. 19-21 in Piru.

Dan Kuches of Bellflower, Flora Yang and Jeffery Yao of Cerritos, Michael and Alicia Setting of Gardena, Yasunari Akita, Minoru Hosoyama, Eric Katzenberg, Shugo Maruyama, Michael McKinney, Robert Ramirez Jr. and Takuma Suzuki of Los Angeles, Seiichi Ishikawa of Montebello, and Hiro Soga of San Gabriel will be among more than 125 speed shooting experts from across America, Japan and Canada.

Shooters are required to draw on the sound of a buzzer and shoot the five targets in the fastest possible time.

GOLF
Two junior golfers from The First Tee of South Los Angeles have been selected to play in the Home Care & Hospice First Tee Open at Pebble Beach Sept. 3-5. Officially part of the Champions Tour, the event will be televised nationally on the Golf Channel.

Samantha Martin, 16, of Los Angeles is playing in her second Open at Pebble Beach. She has a 5.0 handicap.

Brett Silvernail, 18, is the other area golfer entered. The college freshman-to-be has a 1.1 handicap.

FOOTBALL
Signups for the L.A. Demos Packers Pop Warner football and cheer are being held from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and from 2-3:30 p.m. Saturdays at South Park (51st and San Pedro). Registration is also being held every day at The Pass Barbershop, 1128 E. Vernon Ave.

The league is for boys and girls 5-14.
