Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Cerritos College head into the Southern California regional playoffs as South Coast Conference South Division champions.
The men, who were seeded 12th out of 20 teams, get a first-round bye.
The Falcons travel to fifth-seeded Mt. San Antonio, champion of the South Coast Conference North Division Friday. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. This is the first meeting of the season for Cerritos (18-10) and the Mounties (24-4).
On the women’s side, the Falcons (18-11) earned the 12th seed out of the 18 teams and will face Riverside (21-8) in the second round at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Earlier in the season, Cerritos lost a 71-65 nonconference game to the Tigers. The winner plays the winner of the Pasadena City-Irvine Valley game March 6.
Jackson honored
Adria Jackson of Cerritos College is co-MVP of the South Coast Conference South Division.
The sophomore guard from Lynwood High School averaged 13.8 points and 8.4 rebounds during divisional play. For the entire season, she is averaging 15.2 points and 6.6 rebounds and leads the Falcons with 48 steals.
Other Falcons on the All-SCC South first team are freshman forward Rose Boatner (Centennial High), freshman guard April Perry and sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery.
Boatner averaged 13.8 rebounds in divisional play that was highlighted by a 25-rebound effort against El Camino.
Cerritos freshman guard Jazlyn Afusia (St. Paul) was a second-team pick.
Ex-Falcons honored
Former Cerritos College athletes Shannon Simpson and Ryan Tamula have been named to the Scholar Athlete Honor Roll.
Simpson, who spent two seasons on the Falcon cross country and track and field teams, is currently a student at Nevada-Las Vegas, while Tamula, a two-year member of the water polo team, is a student in the nursing program at Cypress College.
A minimum 3.5 grade point average, two years of sports and good citizenship are requirements for nomination.
Simpson, who graduated with the highest honors in liberal arts and sciences, helped the Falcons to two straight track and field state championships by finishing third in the 10,000 meters and fifth in the 5000 as a freshman. She was also an All-Southern California and All-South Coast Conference selection on the cross country team and placed 26th at the state championships as a sophomore.
Tamula, who graduated with a degree in nursing, was an All-American as a sophomore on the water polo team. He was also first-team All-Southern California and first-team All-South Coast Conference, while being named team MVP. He was third on the team as a sophomore with 41 goals after scoring 23 as a freshman.
