Time was running out and Cerritos College men’s basketball coach Russ May was frantically trying to get the officials’ attention to call a timeout.
But his pleas fell on deaf ears and Mt. San Antonio was able to grab a loose ball, which angered the Falcon coach enough to draw a technical in the closing seconds of their second-round game of the Southern California regional playoffs.
After the fifth-seeded Mounties converted one of the two foul shots for a 67-65 lead with nine seconds left, Cerritos quickly fouled Antonio Biglow with four seconds to go. He missed both shots, the second which was rebounded by Cerritos.
Willie Edwards then missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer, allowing Mt. SAC to escape with the win.
Cerritos finishes 18-11.
Sean Chennault led the Falcons with 20 points, 16 in the second half. Marcellus Jackson and Jeremy Pope scored 11 each and Greg Howell had 10.
Women’s basketball
A short bench finally caught up with the Cerritos College women’s basketball team Saturday in the Southern California regionals.
Forced to play with seven players the last few weeks due to injuries, the Falcons (18-12) saw that lack of depth hurt them in a 89-66 loss to No. 5 Riverside.
They stayed close for only a few minutes before the Tigers (22-8) went on a 7-0 run to open a 15-8 lead. By halftime, Riverside was comfortably ahead, 39-19.
Sophomore guard Adria Jackson (Lynwood High School) led the Falcons with 19 points, while freshman guard April Perry had 13 points, four rebounds and two steals. Freshman forward Rose Boatner (Centennial) led with 14 rebounds to go along with her 12 points and three steals, with sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery had nine points and four assists.
