Buensuceso, Bennett all-conference

BYU-Hawaii senior guard Virgil (J.R.) Buensuceso, a former Eagle Rock High School star, and Chaminade junior guard Steven Bennett, who prepped at Dorsey, have earned All-Pacific West Conference second-team honors in men’s basketball.

Buensuceso, a second-team selection last season, as well, averaged 11.6 points, 3.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game while helping BYU-Hawaii to a 22-6 record and a share of the conference title with Dixie State. He ranked 13th in scoring, sixth in assists and sixth in steals.

He shot 35.0 (41 for 117) from 3-point range to rank 10th and his 1.5 per game was 12th in the conference. He also ranked fifth in assist/turnover ratio and was eighth in free throw shooting at 75.5 percent.

In the just-completed NCAA Division II West Regionals, Buensuceso scored 34 points in three games in guiding the Seasiders to the title game. They lost to Cal Poly Pomona, 78-75 Monday to end their season.

The 5-foot-9 guard was a Northern League MVP at Eagle Rock, then went on to play at Citrus College before transferring to BYU-Hawaii.

The 5-6 Bennett ranked third in conference in scoring (17.0), second in assists (5.0) and third in assist/turnover ratio (1.7). He shot 34.5 percent (48 for 139) on 3-pointers to rank 11th and his 1.9 per game was fifth. Bennett was 12th with 1.4 steals per game.

Bennett was an All-Coliseum League selection at Dorsey before going on to Citrus College.
