Henry Washington’s mission, as he see its, goes beyond just winning football games at L.A. Southwest College.

The veteran of 30-plus years as coach of the Cougars also sees the importance of turning players who mostly come from low-income areas into winners in all phases of their lives.

But that is under threat now since the football program is in danger of being the latest casualty of a struggling economy by being suspended unless Washington and a group of community supporters that includes ministers, former administrators and students successfully plead their case to keep it alive during Wednesday’s 3:30 p.m. Los Angeles Community College Board of Directors meeting at L.A. Harbor College.

He adds that he’s been told by the school president, Jack E. Daniels, if he can raise $100,000 by Feb. 28, the program will be saved. Washington said thanks to a private donation, he’s half-way there.

“This (football) program has helped turn lives around,” Washington said. “Athletics are essential and a great tool at this level.”

If football doesn’t survive the cut, the school’s athletic program would consist of men’s and women’s basketball. Washington said there are plans to start men’s and women’s soccer and bring track and field back.

The loss of football, though, would mean the loss of approximately 80 full-time students, in Washington’s view. That also means the loss of money the school would be getting by their presence.

“That fills up a lot of math, science and English classes,” he notes.

The community college system has become an important bridge from high school to the four-year college level for young athletes who didn’t quite have the necessary test scores upon graduation.

Such past NFL players as Mark Fields (who donated the money for the stadium scoreboard), Larry Brown (Super Bowl MVP) and Chris Mims, as well as a current one, Robert Johnson of the Tennessee Titans, passed through the South L.A. campus, along with others too numerous to count who simply played at small schools, then went on to lead successful lives outside of athletics.

L.A. Southwest defensive back Travhn Wolfe, who prepped at Manual Arts High School, said the program has benefited him in more ways than one.

“It’s helped me overcome lot of obstacles in my life,” he said. “It’s helped me stay out of trouble, kept me inside the classroom and helped me get an education.”

Cougars offensive lineman Terrence Johnson says much of the same thing.

“Coach has taught me how to be a man and that education is first,” the former Manual Arts standout said. “Nobody can take that from you. In the last five years, 80 kids who played for him went to four-year colleges.”

Linebacker Tai Wimbish said Washington has been more than a coach to him.

“Coach Washington and the program helped me turn my life around,” Wimbish said. “(I had) no father, no mother, except coach Washington. He’s been there to help me with my exact needs, to be that father figure who wasn’t around there for me. He helped me get my own apartment in Gardena.”

Jose Arias, a freshman placekicker out of Crenshaw, said he never took his studies seriously until he got under the wing of Washington.

That’s why he’s concerned the program might disappear.

“Basically coach Washington built a program that teaches us how to be student-athletes first,” he said. “He encourages us to be in class every day, to work hard in class and on the field. He pushes us to stay in class and be out of here in two years.

“Without football, it’s like taking a rug out from under our feet. It’s our only way out of here.”

“This program is about more than winning football games, it’s about getting young men ready for the rest of their lives. We emphasize things like being a good person, getting to work on time.

“Winning to us is getting a young man, turning his life around and becoming a productive citizen.”

St. John Bosco High School football standouts Bryce Treggs and Beau Boyster faced similar dilemmas during the recruiting process.

Both made early commitments — Treggs to California and Boyster to Arizona — only to see doubt creep in at various times.

Treggs, one of the top wide receiver prospects in the nation, had USC and UCLA come in hard after him late, while Boyster, a center, had to deal with the coach (Mike Stoops) who had been recruiting him lose his job in the middle of the season.

Treggs, who committed to coach Jeff Tedford during the summer, decided to stick to his original decision and sign with the Golden Bears Wednesday, the first day national football letters of intent could be signed.

Boyster, who was also considering TCU after Stoops was fired, also decided to stay with Arizona.

“The new coach, Rich Rodriguez, came in and made me a priority,” the 6-4, 290-pound Boyster said. “He recruited me week in and week out. Their offensive line coach was on campus a lot and I had a good in-home visit.

“I committed to Arizona early, but backed off a little bit when coach Stoops got fired. When they hired coach Rodriguez, it was clear that I still needed to be at Arizona.”

St. John Bosco’s other signees Wednesday included wide receiver/defensive back Charles Redd and defensive back Dalis Bruce with Eastern Washington, which won the 2010 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly 1AA) title, strong safety Shane Baumann with Division II Western New Mexico and wide receiver Justin Johnson with Fresno State.
Fresno State is coached by Tim DeRuyter, a St. John Bosco graduate. The first-year coach made his alma mater was one of his first recruiting stops.

Baumann was sold on Western New Mexico when he made his recruiting trip.

“I fell in love with the atmosphere, the environment,” he said. “I’m really excited.”

St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro told a gathering of faculty, students and family members during the signing ceremony in the gym that these six players are examples of what good can happen when combine excellence in the classroom and on the field.

“They took care of their responsibilities,” he said. “If they did not take care of their classwork, they wouldn’t be up here today.”

Lynwood High School’s Diamonte Williams, who starred at quarterback and in the secondary, has signed a national letter of intent to play football at Eastern Washington University.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder was recruited to the I-AA Division school to play defensive back.

He chose Eastern Washington over Ohio.

“They treated me like family and the education is good,” Wiggins said of his decision. “My parents like the school and I like the school.”

Lynwood football coach Mark Williams added, “It’s a great day when one of our kids signs. It means we did it in the classroom and on the field.

“He picked the school that fits into what he wants to do. He will do great things in life on and off the field because he’s a hard worker on and off the field.”

Few players in recent memory had a more spectacular career than the one James Boyd had at L.A. Jordan High School.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder put up phenomenal numbers as a quarterback and defensive end, earning All-City honors as a junior and senior, and All-American recognition as a senior after throwing for a state-leading 4,266 yards and 44 touchdowns and playing impressively in a head-to-head matchup with future USC quarterback Matt Barkley when he was at Mater Dei.

He was recruited to USC when Pete Carroll was still the coach, but playing time was virtually non-existent while practicing at defensive end, tight end and quarterback. He redshirted with a knee sprain in 2009, then appeared in two games in 2010 without recording a statistic.

He eventually wound up at West L.A. College, but did not compete this season.

Still, he’ll get another chance to resurrect his football career, this time at Nevada, Las Vegas.

He was one of the signees of coach Bobby Hauck, who will give Boyd a chance to compete for the quarterback spot.

The Rebels return Caleb Herring, Sean Reilly, Taylor Barnhill and Nick Sherry at that position. Their recruiting class also included Glendale, Ariz. prep Troy Hawthorne.

“James Boyd transferred here from USC and West L.A. and has two years left,” Hauck said. “He wanted a chance to try to break into the quarterback depth and he’ll get that opportunity here.”

NOTES
Another quarterback with local connections will also be continuing his college career.

Omar Herrera, who prepped at Locke High and has been El Camino College’s quarterback the past two seasons, has signed with Mississippi Valley State, the alma mater of former NFL great Jerry Rice.

Kevin Laudermill, a 6-3, 300-pound defensive tackle from West L.A. College, has signed with New Mexico.

He recorded 40 tackles, including five for loss and four sacks while earning second-team all-conference honors this fall.

Laudermill was an All-Coliseum League lineman at Manual Arts High in 2008.

Julius Childs, a cornerback from Lynwood High and ECC Compton, has signed with Youngstown State.

Childs had 29 tackles, seven pass breakups and a 24.5 yards per kickoff return average at Compton this season. He had an 83-yarder against East L.A.

SEATTLE —Terrence Ross scored 10 of Washington’s final 12 points to finish with 22, and the Huskies overcame a 10-point deficit with seven minutes remaining to beat UCLA, 71-69 Thursday at Alaska Airlines Arena.

Ross’ 3-pointer from the wing with 1:20 remaining turned out to be the game-winner, but the Huskies (15-7, 8-2 Pac-12) had to watch Norman Powell’s baseline jumper with 3 seconds left hang on the rim and fall off before celebrating their fourth straight win over the Bruins.

Ross scored 18 points in the second half and made 9 of 12 shots overall. Tony Wroten added 13 points and ex-Crenshaw High School star Darnell Gant had 12 for the Huskies, who retained at least a share of the conference lead.

Josh Smith scored a career-high 24 points for UCLA (12-10, 5-5) and added nine rebounds, but had just three points in the final 12 minutes when Washington switched to a zone defense.

“They were in such an offensive rhythm number one, and number two Aziz [N’Diaye] had three fouls,” Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said on why he switched to zone defense. “We were trying to get them out of their rhythm and keep Aziz in there. We are not a zone team, but we practice it enough to be able to run it, and I thought it was effective tonight.”

Lazeric Jones ended with 11 points for the Bruins and David Wear chipped in 10 points for UCLA, which lost its eighth-straight at Washington.

“I was really proud of the way our team played in a difficult environment,” UCLA coach Ben Howland said. “It was just disappointing to lose this game after preparing so hard in practice. I thought Joshua Smith played terrific today.

“But our defense — they shot 52 percent — and our inability to attack to zone in the last five minutes, hurt us tonight. We got a little discombobulated; we had a couple of turnovers. We didn’t execute some things down the stretch offensively.”

PULLMAN, Wash. — Brock Motum scored 26 points to lead Washington State past UC, 60-53 Thursday night in a Pac-12 men’s basketball game.

Motum was hot from the onset, scoring 11 of the Cougars’ (12-10, 4-6) first 16 points. WSU led 30-24 at halftime.

The Trojans (6-17, 1-9) went on a 14-4 run midway through the second half, cutting the Cougars’ lead to 49-45 with 6:42 remaining, but WSU went 4 of 5 at the free throw line during a minute-long span to go up 56-45 with 3:38 left.

Motum accounted for WSU’s final two points when he grabbed a defensive rebound and was immediately fouled, proceeding to hit both foul shots. Motum was the only Cougar player to finish in double figures.

USC had three players notch double figures with Greg Allen leading with 17 points. Garrett Jackson added 15 and Byron Wesley finished with 12.

Not even a coaching change could shake the resolve of Dominguez High School’s nationally-ranked offensive lineman Lacy Westbrook.

As long as UCLA still wanted him, the 6-foot-5, 300-pounder was going to stick with his early commitment to the Bruins, despite seeing Rick Neuheisel, the coach who originally recruited him, fired at the end of the regular season and ultimately replaced by Jim Mora Jr.

He made it official Wednesday by signing with the Bruins in a ceremony on the campus.

Three of his teammates also decided Wednesday, the first day national football letters of intent could be signed.

Defensive tackle Dejon Allen signed with Hawaii, defensive end Damion Turpin with Washington and cornerback Lavell Sanders with Northern Colorado.

Safety Brandon Beaver and cornerback Alphonso Marsh delayed their decisions so they could make them on television later in the day. Beaver signed with Washington, Marsh with Utah.

“I was a little concerned at the time of the change because I didn’t know if the new coach would still want me,” Westbrook said. “But this is where I always wanted to go. Its athletics are really good and a degree from there creates many opportunities.”

Winning games and sending players to the next level has been central to the Compton-based school since Willie Donerson took over as coach in 1984.

Keith, his son, and Willie have seen 78 player take their football careers to the college ranks, and some even to the NFL, notably Richard Sherman and Kevin Burnett.

“Although championships are big, this is bigger,” Keith Donerson said of the signings. “This is about life.”

He said the ceremony held on the campus quad in front of a large group of the student body is important.

“It lets the kids here know they can go to Stanford (as Sherman did), or to Tennessee (Burnett), they don’t necessarily have to go to a local school,” he said. “It also motivates the younger kids.”

Soccer and basketball were the sport of choices growing for Carlos Lozano.

But when you are as big as him, it only seems a matter of time before someone points you in the direction of the football field.

That was the case for the 6-foot-8, 360-pound East L.A. College offensive lineman, whose career took another big step Wednesday when he signed a national letter of intent with the University of Utah.

That was quite a step for someone who didn’t take up the sport until his sophomore year at Montebello High School. He actually quit before that season was over, but returned to start as a junior and senior for the Oilers.

“I thought the sport was too tough,” he said of the initial decision to give it up.

He reconsidered, deciding to prove others wrong that he could handle the rigors of football.

His first year at East L.A. saw modest success as a part-time starter for the Huskies. He made a big leap this year, earning numerous scholarship offers.

Kansas, Washington State and Florida International were among his final choices before deciding on Utah.

“I liked everything about my visit there,” Lozano said. “The coaches know my potential is high, but I have to lose a little weight and get in shape and if I do that I could be a potential NFL draft pick.”

Lozano said he currently weighs between 380 and 400 pounds, considerably more than his official program weight.

He promises that will come down.

“I want to be at 375 before game one (in September),” he said. “They want me to drop weight so I can go for 90 plays every game.”

New ELAC coach Steve Mojarro said Lozano’s potential is unlimited.

“He’s only going to get better,” he said. “He’s 420 now and needs to get down to 360. When he does that, he’ll be something for the next level and beyond.”

Mojarro has always loved Lozano’s attitude.

“When he came to us, he never had that prima donna attitude that I have to start because I’m 6-8,” he said. “He wanted to earn it, he always wanted to get better.”

ELAC also had defensive lineman Christopher Floyd sign with Division II Lindenwood (N.J.), wide receiver Chris De Leon with Division Panhandle State (Okla.), cornerback Nasir Moore with Kansas, offensive lineman Roberto Limon with Division II Lincoln (Mo.) and wide receiver Emanuel Rodriguez with Division III La Verne.

DeLeon, also a Montebello grad, came in for special praise from Mojarro.

“He almost didn’t make the team his first year here, but he persevered and worked so hard,” the coach said. “He proved us wrong.”

This group goes with the mid-year signees in wide receiver Mike Allen with Bowling Green, linebacker Freddy Aguilar with UC Davis, offensive lineman Ramon Barraza with Lindenwood, offensive lineman Caesar Aguila with NAIA school Belhaven, and offensive linemen Edgar Rosales and Jose Garcia with Panhandle State.

Dorsey High School’s Jaydon Mickens, the Wave Newspapers Player of the Year, signed a national football letter of intent with Washington Wednesday.

He is one of three Dons to make their college choices official on the first day letters could be signed.

Linebacker Jeremiah Allison signed with Washington State and offensive tackle Justin Johnson with the Air Force Academy.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Mickens played quarterback, running back, wide receiver and defensive back while leading the Dons to the City Section Division I semifinals.

He scored 23 touchdowns and 138 points total, caught 32 passes for 558 yards and rushed for 378.

Mickens is ranked the No. 11 athlete recruit in the nation, the No. 26 overall prospect in California and the No. 142 overall recruit in the country by rivals.com. Scout.com has him rated the nation’s No. 45 wide receiver and the No. 32 recruit in California.

Allison, who had 63 sacks in three years for the Dons, isn’t the only area player to sign under new Washington State coach Mike Leach.

Former Centennial High and current L.A. Harbor College running back Theron West, Venice wide receiver Gabriel Marks, Serra linebacker Kache Palacio, South East running back Robert Lewis and the Culver City duo of outside linebacker Khalil Pettway and wide receiver Alex Jackson also signed with the Cougars.

Carson High School wide receiver Darreus Rogers, Inglewood defensive back Devian Shelton and Downey linebacker Jabari Ruffin were among the 11 high school and one junior college player signed Wednesday by the USC football program.

Additionally, three high school players, a junior college player and a college transfer already enrolled at USC in January and will participate in the upcoming spring practice.

The class includes wide receiver Nelson Agholor of Berkeley Prep in Tampa, Fla.; offensive lineman Zach Banner of Lakewood, Wash.; tight end Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick of Whitney in Rocklin; running back Jahleel Pinner of Mission Viejo; defensive back Kevon Seymour of Muir; offensive lineman Jordan Simmons of Crespi; offensive lineman Max Tuerk of Santa Margarita; and defensive lineman Leonard Williams of Daytona Beach, Fla.

Safety Gerald Bowman of L.A. Pierce College is the JC signee.

Prep players who joined USC last month as freshmen are linebacker Scott Starr of Norco, offensive tackle Chad Wheeler of Santa Monica and defensive end DeVante Wilson of Corona. Wilson originally signed with USC in February of 2011 and was set to enroll for the 2011 fall semester, but tore ligaments in his knee and sat out that semester.

The juco player who joined USC in January as a junior is defensive end Morgan Breslin of Diablo Valley College.

“I’m very excited to welcome this class to USC,” Trojan coach Lane Kiffin said. “Our coaching staff, headed by recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron, did a great job of signing such quality student-athletes under the circumstances with which we are faced.

“We are working with a limited number of scholarships due to the sanctions, so it was extremely critical for us to concentrate on the quality of players that we signed rather than the quantity.

“One common attribute of these signees is their ability to compete. None of them were worried about depth charts or playing time.”

For a change, the shots were dropping for USC rather than the other guys.

Finally running into a team they could beat, the injury-depleted Trojans snapped an eight-game losing streak by beating Utah, 62-45 before 2,826 Saturday at Galen Center.

Just a day after learning center Dewayne Dedmon would probably be lost for the season with a torn MCL in his left knee suffered in Thursday’s game to Colorado, USC responded positively for its Pac-12 victory.

Forward Garrett Jackson scored a career-high 16 points to match point guard Maurice Jones for team high-point honors and their efficiency helped the Trojans (6-16, 1-8) shoot 48.0 percent from the field, including 54.2 percent during a first half in which they built a 32-14 lead.

Coach Kevin O’Neill believes a big weight is off the shoulders of the Trojans, who have a trip to the Washington school this coming week.

“I think they’re relieved, I know I’m relieved,” O’Neill said. “I’m happy for the players and the fans.

“I’ve been through a lot of losing streaks in my lifetime. They’re hard to deal with. It’s especially hard for young people to deal with.”

Jackson, one of six scholarship players still available, said it has been frustrating to see so many of his teammates (five have suffered season-ending injuries beginning last summer).

“But we still can’t fall apart in crucial times,” he said. “We’ve got to stick together and be there for one another.”

O’Neill feels the 6-7 Jackson could be crucial for the Trojans down the stretch.

“He can shoot the 3 and he’s a pretty good mismatch around the basket,” the coach said. “If he can knock down some shots, he’ll make us far better.”

Jackson, whose previous high was 13 points, said he wasn’t even aware of how many points he had.

“I didn’t know, I’m just happy we won,” he said.

Byron Wesley and Greg Allen each scored nine points and were a combined 4-for-5 on 3-pointers. The Trojans, as a team, were 7-for-17 from beyond the arc.

Forward Dijon Farr scored 12 points, while center Jason Washburn and guard Chris Hines had 10 each for the Utes (5-16, 2-7).

Utah hit only 29.4 percent of its shots during a woeful first half and 36.7 percent for the game.

Despite having only one player with much size (7-1 James Blasczyk), the Trojans had a 34-24 advantage in rebounding.

Now the Trojans hit the road, beginning with Thursday’s game at Washington State.

“We’ve actually played better on the road than at home in league,” O’Neill said. “Hopefully, we’ll go up there and get some road wins.”

For the second time in two years, USC has seen a high school standout make a late switch from a verbal commitment to the Trojans to become an Oregon Duck.

A year after Crenshaw High School’s De’Anthony Thomas made a late switch from USC to Oregon, 6-8, 295-pound defensive end Arik Armstead has done the same.

The product of Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove (near Sacramento) made the decision Saturday.

Rivals.com has him the No. 61 player nationally.

London Finley, a product of Inglewood’s St. Mary’s Academy High School, helped establish a school record for the Georgetown University women’s track and field team at the Penn State National meet over the weekend.

The Los Angeles native ran the second leg of the distance medley relay team that finished first in 10:55.95, nearly five seconds faster than the existing mark of 11:00.67. The time is an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Idaho.

After Rachel Schneider completed the first 1,200 meters, Finley, a Big East individual champion, covered the 400 portion of the race behind handing off to Chelsea Cox.

“It was a great effort and they did it leading from the gun and carrying the workloads themselves,” associate head coach Chris Miltenberg said. “This is an event we have such a rich tradition in so to knock nearly five seconds off the school record in one shot is a huge accomplishment and a great sign of where we are right now.”

Also during the two-day meet, Finley placed second in the 500 invitatinal in 1:13.06, a Big East qualifying time.

As the losses mount, so do the injuries for the USC men’s basketball team.

The Trojans, 74-50 losers to Colorado Thursday at Galen Center, might be down to six scholarship players in uniform the rest of the way after losing center Dewayne Dedmon to a knee injury in the first half. He was scheduled to have an MRI on it Friday.

“Their guy took a charge and fell back into my leg and it hyper-extended it,” Dedmon said.

He said he was hopeful of returning until testing the leg on the sidelines.

“I ran back and forth a few times before I realized it wasn’t going to happen,” he said.

USC, which will take records of 5-16 overall and 0-8 in the Pac-12 into Saturday’s game with visiting Utah, likely would have lost anyway to the Buffaloes, but the injury to Dedmon made it a virtual impossibility.

“Injuries are a part of basketball, but with no junior and senior class to anchor the team, we don’t enough depth to sustain these kinds of injuries.”

The Trojans have already lost such mainstays as Jio Fontan, Aaron Fuller and Evan Smith for the season before Dedmon went down.

What was left of the Trojans wasn’t enough to hold off a solid Colorado team that is now 14-6 overall, 6-2 in conference.

The Buffaloes outrebounded the undersized Trojans 51-24 and had five players score in double figures, including Askia Booker, a freshman guard from L.A.’s Price High School, who had 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Booker hit three 3-pointers and had four offensive rebounds among his total. He also had an assist and a steal in 25 minutes.

Starting forwards Andre Roberson (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Austin Dufault (11 points, six rebounds) and starting guard Carlon Brown (13 points, nine rebounds) were also in double figures, as was reserve Jeremy Adams (10 points).

Point guard Maurice Jones had 13 points to lead the Trojans, but was just 4 of 15 from the field. It should be had to play 38 minutes. Forward Byron Wesley had 12.

James Blasczyk had eight points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes, but he went down late with an apparent injury. Fortunately for the Trojans, it just turned out to be leg cramps.

Looking ahead, Dedmon said, “We’ve got to figure things out in practice and everybody needs to step up and fill the void.”

If he can’t help on the court, he said he’ll be around for moral support.

“I’ll try to be a leader from the bench and keep the guys spirits up,” he said.

Joshua Smith scored 14 points, while David Wear and Jerime Anderson had 13 each to lead UCLA past Utah, 76-49 at the Sports Arena Thursday night.

Tyler Lamb had 10 points for the Bruins (11-9, 4-4 Pac-12).

Ben Howland, in his ninth year, recorded his 200th career head coaching victory at UCLA.

“This was a good win for us,” Howland said. “The guys came out and played very well defensively for 40 minutes. We did a good job sharing the ball and making good passes.”

Anderson made 5-of-6 field goals, including 2-of-3 three-point attempts, and tallied three assists and three steals.

UCLA led 36-21 at halftime and outscored Utah by a 26-12 margin in the opening 10:29 of the second half to secure a 62-33 cushion.

The harshest assessment of USC’s performance against UCLA was provided by one of its players.

“Honestly, we embarrassed ourselves and did a disservice to the university with how we played,” guard Alexis Moore said of the Trojans’ 66-47 loss to UCLA Sunday before 8,474 at Galen Center.

Considering it was a rivalry game, Moore had no explanation for his team’s effort.

“You would think we would come out and execute a lot better,” he said. “Unfortunately we didn’t, so this has to be a learning experience coming out for the next game.”

USC coach Kevin O’Neill’s evaluation was a bit softer.

“They have a lot of weapons on that front line that are tough to deal with,” O’Neill said in reference to the Wear twins, David and Travis, Josh Smith and backup center Anthony Stover, all of whom go 6-10.

“They did a great job of establishing an inside game and took the game to us from the get-go,” he said.

The size advantage enjoyed by the Bruins, now 10-7 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-12, led to a 44-19 edge in rebounds.

Travis Wear led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds and David had 13 points and seven rebounds. Stover blocked three shots.

“Stover’s minutes in the first half, where he was changing shots, blocking shots, defensively was a huge boost,” UCLA coach Ben Howland said.

Guard Lazeric Jones added 15 points for UCLA, which also outshot the Trojans (5-13, 0-5), 51.0 to 36.0 percent.

Sophomore point guard Maurice Jones led the Trojans with 13 points, but he was the only one who reached double figures. Moore was next with nine and Aaron Fuller had eight.

Leading 13-10 at the 7:30 mark of the first half, the Bruins took control, outscoring USC, 24-9 the rest of the half. They increased the margin to 43-20 early in the second half.

O’Neill was impressed with what he saw.

“I think they are an ever-improving team,” he said of the Bruins. “Ben made a very difficult decision early in the year to dismiss someone (forward Reeves Nelson) from the team,” he said. “They play hard, they play together and share the ball. They appear to be moving in the right direction.”

Harold Miner, one of the greatest USC basketball players of all time, was honored by having his No. 23 jersey retired and a banner with his name and number raised to the rafters during halftime ceremonies of Sunday’s USC-UCLA game at Galen Center.

With his wife and two children, as well as many of his old teammates, present, Miner told the crowd of 8,474, “I always played with two goals. First, to win, and second, to give everyone their money’s worth each and every night.”

Miner, who had a brilliant prep career at Inglewood High School where he earned the moniker “Baby Jordan” for a dunking ability that invited comparisons to Michael Jordan, set USC career records with 2,048 points, a 23.5 scoring average and 19 30-point games from 1990-92. He was the Sports Illustrated player of the year, an AP first-team All-American and Pac-10 player of the year while averaging 26.3 points per game on a 24-6 Trojan team his final season.

During an NBA career that began in 1992 as the 12th overall pick of the Miami Heat and ended in 1996 with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miner averaged 9.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.

Now a resident of Las Vegas, Miner returned this past weekend, visiting with the USC team during Friday’s practice.

“It was a privilege to meet somebody who put USC basketball on the map,” Trojan guard Alexis Moore said.

USC coach Kevin O’Neill, who knew Miner from his NBA days, said, “I’m glad he came back here. He’s a great guy and a first-class individual. It was an honor to have him here.

“He had a better NBA career than most people think, even better than he thinks.”

USC does most things to coach Kevin O’Neill’s satisfaction.

But when it comes to the most important aspect of the game — namely shooting the basketball — the Trojans come up woefully short.

That issued reared its ugly head Sunday at Galen Center in a 57-46 loss to Arizona.

USC (5-12, 0-4), now buried at the bottom of the Pac-12 standings, shot only 29.3 percent from the field and 6.7 percent (1 of 15) from 3-point range.

“We rebound very well, I think our defense is very good and we value the ball (minimal turnovers), but we’re just not scoring points, and I don’t have a real answer for it,” O’Neill said.

“When you shoot 29 percent, plus 6 percent from 3-point range, that’s not going to beat anybody, anywhere, anytime.”

Byron Wesley, whose 4 for 13 shooting (for eight points) epitomized Trojan woes added, “We’re getting great shots, we’re just not making them.”

The poor shooting prevented the Trojans from making any serious run at the Wildcats (11-5, 2-1), who were not exactly red-hot themselves.

They shot 43.8 percent from the field and turned the ball over 17 times, yet managed to maintain a double-digit lead most of the way. They were up by 20 late in the first half and by as many as 18 after the break.

Forward Jesse Perry led Arizona with 20 points, followed by forward Solomon Hill with 11 points and 10 rebounds and guard Kyle Fogg with 10 points.

Sophomore guard Jordin Mayes, the former Westchester High School standout, had four points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench for the Wildcats.

For the Trojans, point guard Maurice Jones led the way with 14 points, though he was 3 for 13 from the field. Center Dewayne Dedmon scored 11 points despite early foul trouble that limited him to 21 minutes.

“I wish I had an answer,” O’Neill said of finding a solution to the poor shooting. “Of the 15 3’s, 12 were wide open shots and we only made one. It was ugly to watch. I feel for the guys because they’re not trying to miss.”

NOTES
USC returns to action Sunday at Galen Center against UCLA (9-7, 2-2), which swept the Arizona schools. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.

At halftime, USC will be retiring the No. 23 jersey of Harold Miner (Inglewood High). Miner, the Trojans all-time career scorer with 2,048 points, played at USC from 1990-92.

Junior college football team in the Southland will take on a new look the next two years.

The Southern California Football Association announced this week a new conference and division structure that will be in force in the fall.

Over the past two seasons, the SCFA consisted of three divisions, but in the new structure, the National and Central divisions have been combined to form three seven-team conferences in the new National Division.

The American Division remains the same as the past two seasons, but with the addition of three teams formerly in the Central Division, will contain two eight-team conferences.

Compton and East L.A. are in the American Division’s Mountain Conference, L.A. Southwest, Santa Monica and West L.A. in the American Pacific.

Cerritos remains in the National Division Northern Conference and retains four common opponents from the previous two seasons in Hancock, Bakersfield, Ventura and Canyons. Moorpark and Pasadena are the two new teams in the conference.

“Geographical considerations and maintaining competitive balance were key factors in the placement process,” SCFA commissioner Jim Sartoris said.

Four teams will qualify for the Southern California playoffs. Playoff teams will consist of champions from each National Division conference with the next highest-ranked team in the final CCCAA/CCCFCA Southern California poll earning a berth. The champions of each American Division conference will also qualify for a division championship bowl game.

Schedules for the upcoming season should be developed by late February.

USC forward Aaron Fuller is scheduled to have surgery on his left shoulder Thursday at USC Hospital.

The junior, who has a tear of the anterior labrium, is second on the team with a 10.6 scoring average and leads the Trojans with 5.9 rebounds per game.

He was originally hurt in a preseason scrimmage against Air Force. While USC was in the Bay Area at the beginning of Pac-12 play, he suffered a slight tear in his right labrum, which compounded the problem.

The injury leaves the Trojans, who host Colorado at Galen Center Thursday, with seven available scholarship players.

USC is 5-15 overall, 0-7 in the Pac-12.

Even a short-handed Arizona State team proved too much to overcome for a young USC men’s basketball team.

Despite having just six scholarship players available due to three suspensions, including starting guard and leading scorer Keala King, the Sun Devils defeated USC, 62-53 Thursday before a crowd of 3,112 at Galen Center.

Forward Carrick Felix scored 22 points and guard Trent Lockett added 19 in helping Arizona State (5-9, 1-1) shoot 61.1 percent from the floor in winning for the first time in Pac-12 action.

The Sun Devils did it despite playing just seven players, one of which was freshman walk-on guard Max Heller, see action.

Considering the circumstances, did the Trojans, now 5-11 overall and 0-3 in the Pac-12, take the Sun Devils lightly?

“To me it would be incredulous if we took anybody lightly in our situation rebuilding-wise,” USC coach Kevin O’Neill said. “Sometimes it’s human nature to do that, but if we did, it’s a valuable lesson that you just can’t let it happen.”

Center Dewayne Dedmon, who had a team-high seven rebounds, five on the offensive end, said O’Neill warned his team beforehand the Sun Devils would respond in a positive manner.

“K.O. told us they were going to band together and play hard, so we had to expect that,” he said. “I don’t think we let down, we weren’t guarding how we usually do.”

USC, which trailed by 10 (34-24) at halftime, closed to within three points at 42-39 in the final 20 minutes before Arizona State went on another surge.

Jonathan Gilling and Felix hit back to back 3-pointers to give the Sun Devils a 52-41 lead with 4:35 left. The Trojans managed to close to 56-51 on two free throws by Maurice Jones with 43 seconds left, but that would be as close as they would get.

A layin by Jones got it back to five points at 58-53, but the Sun Devils got the next four points on a layin and two free throws by Felix.

Aaron Fuller led USC with 14 points and Jones, who played all 40 minutes, scored 13. Byron Wesley added 10.

The Trojans can’t dwell on this loss for long because a date with Arizona looms Sunday.

“We’ve got to pick our heads up and come out with intensity Sunday,” Dedmon said.

There haven’t been many better pipelines to major college soccer programs than the men’s team at Cerritos College.

The four latest signings — defender Jaime Cano, defender Alejandro Covarrubias, forward Aaron Macedo and midfielder Juan Ochoa — pushes the total to 49 since 2004 and 25 in the last three years for players moving from the Falcons to the next level.

Cano, a graduate of Inglewood’s Animo Leadership Charter High School, has signed with Cal State Fullerton, while Covarrubias, a Bell product, is headed to NCAA Division II power Cal State University Dominguez Hills. Covarrubias was originally committed to UCLA, but could not meet the university’s entrance requirements.

Macedo, a South Gate grad, and Ochoa, from Paramount, have signed with Cal State L.A.

Cano was a first-team All-South Coast Conference selection after helping Cerritos go 17-3-2 and end up ranked nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Covarrubias was the SCC defensive player of the year and a JC Division III All-American.

Ochoa, who had four goals and eight assists, was second-team All-SCC

The remaining Falcons that still looking to sign are goalkeeper Danny Lizama and forward Alberto Lazaro, a Huntington Park grad.

Football signings
Four Cerritos College football players have already signed and are currently attending four-year schools.

Tight end Clark Evans has signed with Hawaii, strong safety Daniel Roundtree with SMU, linebacker Dominick Sierra with Northern Colorado and offensive lineman Brandon Davidson with Benedictine (Kan.) College, an NAIA school.
