Freshman tailback Dillon Baxter caught a touchdown and ran for another to highlight USC’s scrimmage Saturday.

The 101-play intrasquad scrimmage also saw receivers Markeith Ambles and David Ausberry catching scoring passes and tailback Marc Tyler have a rushing TD.

Baxter scored on an 11-yard pass from Matt Barkley and a two-yard run). Ambles, one of the highly-regarded freshman wideouts, had five catches for 83 yards overall, including a 15-yard TD from Mitch Mustain. Ausberry’s touchdown catch was on an eight-yard pass from Mustain.

Tyler, who ran for 76 yards on 11 carries overall, had a five-yard TD run.

Placekicker Joe Houston hit both of his field goal attempts (32 and 43 yards).

Barkley was 9-of-13 for 116 yards, while Mustain was 12-of-19 for 141 yards.

Tailback Allen Bradford had 62 yards on nine carries and tailback Curtis McNeal added 52 yards on seven.

Cornerback Demetrius Wright had 11 tackles to top the defense. Linebackers Devon Kennard, Shane Horton and Will Andrew and safety Cody Romness had four stops apiece. Defensive end Armond Armstead had two tackles for losses.

“I was pleased with the run game,” Trojan coach Lane Kiffin said. “That was good to see. I also thought the quarterbacks played well and Ambles had a very good day.”

Because 14 scholarship players were held out of the scrimmage due to nagging injuries, Kiffin had the defense not finish its tackles in the second half to prevent injuries.

The Trojans open the season at Hawaii Sept. 2.
