A number of highly-touted freshman made their marks during USC’s first intrasquad football scrimmage of fall camp Sunday.
Wide receiver Robert Woods from Serra High School had four receptions for a scrimmage-best 56 yards, linebacker Hayes Pullard from Crenshaw had four tackles, running back Dillon Baxter from San Diego had 39 yards on five rushes and and wide receiver Markeith Ambles had two catches for 21 yards.
To be sure, a lot of the veterans had their moments.
Receiver David Ausberry caught a pair of touchdown passes and tailback Curtis McNeal ran 30 yards for a touchdown to highlight the scrimmage.
Ausberry caught a 5-yard scoring toss from quarterback Mitch Mustain and a 10-yarder from quarterback Matt Barkley.
On his scoring run, McNeal was nearly knocked down twice, but kept his balance to break away. McNeal had 57 yards on six carries.
Mustain, running the second-team offense against the second-team defense, completed 23 of 35 passes for 231 yards. Barkley, guiding the first-team offense against the first-team defense, was 9-of-15 for 127 yards. Neither quarterback threw an interception.
Tight end Jordan Cameron caught eight passes for 96 yards.
USC's other score came on a 35-yard interception return by walk-on linebacker Alonso Augusto off freshman quarterback Jesse Scroggins.
Marc Tyler had 34 yards on seven attempts and C.J. Gable had 25 yards on seven carries.
Walk-on receiver Robbie Boyer had four catches for 34 yards, Ronald Johnson had three for 39 yards and Rhett Ellison had two for 32.
Linebacker Devon Kennard led the defense with seven tackles, while safety Dion Bailey had. Linebackers Malcolm Smith (with a sack and deflection), Ross Cumming, cornerbacks Nickell Robey and Brian Baucham, safety T.J. McDonald and defensive tackle DaJohn Harris all had four tackles.
“It was a good scrimmage, but we have a lot to work on,” Trojan coach Lane Kiffin, whose team was in its first day of full pads, said. “To go 93 plays and have only one turnover, and that was by the third team, was good for the offense. But the defense has to do a better job of getting the ball out. The defense did do a good job against the run. On offense, I thought Mustain picked right up from where he left off in the spring. Cameron and Ellison made a bunch of plays and Ausberry continued to do a good job.”
The Trojans open the season at Hawaii Sept. 2.
