Crenshaw High School grad Raymond Carter, who began his college football career at UCLA, is making a splash in his first season at Colorado State.
After a solid spring in which he vied for the top spot on the tailback depth chart, the 6-foot, 217-pound junior continued to impress during fall camp.
He was clearly one of the Ram standouts during Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage.
Carter’s 33-yard reception from Pete Thomas broke open a tight battle, giving the offense a lead it would not give up Saturday.
The Los Angeles native patiently followed his blockers on the play down the right sideline before the defense pushed him out of bounds at the 7-yard line, setting up what would’ve been a first-and-goal. The No. 3-rated running back in the nation as a senior at Crenshaw sat out the 2009 season after transferring from UCLA.
“Raymond’s got some skills and he showed his big-play ability both in the run game and the pass game today,” CSU coach Steve Fairchild said of Carter, who had six carries for 45 yards in the 61-play scrimmage. “I thought he really stood out. I thought Pete Thomas stood out.”
Carter is being pushed for playing time in a deep backfield by last year’s leading rusher, Leonard Mason, another veteran, John Mosure, Chris Nwoke and speedy Tony Drake.
“These guys all have different talents,” running backs coach Anthoney Hill said. “It’s just about trying to figure out what they do best and put them in position to succeed with what they do best, and that’s playing itself out right now.”
CSU defensive back Elijah-Blu Smith, also a Crenshaw High product, had an interception and two tackles during the first major scrimmage of the fall for the Rams.
CROCKOM CATCHING ON
Mitchell Crockom, a freshman wide receiver from Alhambra High, is performing during fall drills like he plans to be in the mix at Idaho.
In the Vandals’ first scrimmage, he had four catches for 25 yards.
Robert Hatchett III (Centennial) is another wide receiver candidate for Idaho.
FRAMPTON STANDING OUT
Dwayne Frampton, a standout receiver at Dorsey High and a JC All-American at L.A. Harbor College last year, is projected to start at wideout for Arkansas State this fall.
He had three catches for 11 yards in the Red Wolves’ most recent scrimmage.
Frampton participated in spring ball for the Sun Belt Conference school after catching 78 passes for 1,246 yards at Harbor last season.
SPARTAN EFFORTS
Noel Grigsby, a redshirt freshman wide receiver from Crenshaw High, and sophomore running back David Freeman, an Inglewood grad who began his college career at Washington, are making serious bids for playing time at San Jose State.
During the Spartans most recent scrimmage, Grigsby caught four passes for 41 yards and Freeman, a running back, carried 11 times for 30 yards and a TD.
