LAKERS TITLE IS TOPS
The Lakers winning the NBA championship was named the top sports moment of 2009 at the fifth annual LA Sports Awards show at the JW Marriott at L.A. Live.

Title number 15 for the Lakers, who defeated the Orlando Magic in five games in last year’s finals, beat Zenyatta’s Run to Glory to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Nov. 7 and the Angels sweep of the Boston Red Sox Oct. 11 to advance to the American League Championship Series.

The L.A. Sports Council presents the awards annually.

DODGERTOWN CLASSIC
UCLA and USC’s baseball teams square off in the first Dodgertown Classic at Dodger Stadium Sunday.

The Bruins and Trojans play the nonconference game at 2 p.m. In the first game, Vanderbilt faces Oklahoma State at 10 a.m.

All proceeds benefit the Dodgers Dream Foundation, which builds Dodgers Dreamfields for children. The Dodgers Dream Foundation will also extend invitations to these games to local children and families and provide an interactive forum for children and tournament participants.

DUO HONORED
Cal State L.A.’s Sam Wiley and Wally Goodline are winners of the California Collegiate Athlete Association player of the week honors for baseball.

Wiley, a senior catcher/outfielder is player of the week and Goodline, a junior, took top pitcher honors in helping the Golden Eagles win three of four in the opening conference series against Cal State Stanislaus.

Wiley, a transfer from Westmont College, batted .529 (9-for-17) with a home run run and six RBIs over the four games.

Goodline threw a season-high eight innings to lead the Golden Eagles to an 8-4 win in the series opener. It was the first career victory for the pitcher who missed most of last season with an injury.

COLSON HONORED
Cal Poly Pomona junior guard Reyana Colson, a Lynwood High School graduate, was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball player of the week.

The Compton native averaged 20.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals to help the Broncos gain road victories at Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills and remain a game behind first-place UC San Diego. Her big night was a 24-point, 10-rebound, three-steal effort against Dominguez Hills.

SALESIAN NO. I
Salesian High School, the defending champion in the division, is ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division 5 preseason boys volleyball poll. Ranked second is St. Margaret’s, which lost to the Mustangs in last year’s title game.

Cantwell Sacred Heart is eighth.

In Division 4, Cathedral is fourth, San Gabriel seventh and Montebello ninth.

Loyola tops the Division I poll. St. John Bosco is fourth.

The polls are voted on by a committee of coaches.
