NAVARRO AN ANGEL INVITE
Among the non-roster invitees to the Angels spring training camp in Tempe, Ariz. is infielder Efren Navarro, a former Lynwood High School and Nevada, Las Vegas standout.

A first baseman, Navarro batted .287 with five home runs and 61 RBIs in 130 games for the Angels single-A California League club Rancho Cucamonga.

He was a 50th-round draft pick of the Angels out of UNLV in 2007.

HARRICK TO BE HONORED
Former UCLA coach Jim Harrick will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award in ceremonies during the 12th annual Collision High School All-Star Basketball games April 24 at El Camino College.

The boys and girls games have a City vs. Southern section formats.

Harrick, the last coach to win a national championship at UCLA in 1995, began his coaching career at Inglewood’s Morningside High School. He will become the first former college coach to receive this award, which will be named in his honor.

“This recognition is most appropriate because Jim Harrick represents what is great about high school basketball in Southern California,” event director Kenneth Miller said.

Past recipients include former coaching legend Willie West of Crenshaw and Ed Azzam of Westchester.

ALL-BIG WEST
Cal State senior forward Gerard Anderson (Verbum Dei, Carson high schools) was named to the All-Big West Conference first team in men’s basketball.

Cal State Fullerton’s Jer’Vaughn Johnson (Centennial) and Jacques Streeter (Fremont) were honorable  mention.

HONORS FOR NOE
Former Alhambra High School star Noe Ramirez has been named the Big West Conference pitcher of the week after throwing his first career complete game in leading Cal State Fullerton to a 6-1 victory over Arizona Saturday in Tucson. The East L.A. native struck out nine, walked one and allowed five hits while facing just eight batters over the minimum.

The right-hander lost his shutout with one out in the ninth inning.

TOP PITCHER
Cal State Dominguez Hills right-hander Bret Montgomery is the California Collegiate Athletic Association pitcher of the week after tossing a seven-inning, complete-game one-hitter in a 9-0 win against Sonoma State Saturday.

He allowed one walk and struck out nine in facing just one batter over the minimum. He had a no-hitter for 6.1 innings.

ANGEL SHINES
Cal State Dominguez Hills senior first baseman Amber Angel has been named the CCAA softball player of the week.

Angel batted .583 (7-for-12), with a 1.500 slugging percentage as the Toros took three out of four from host Cal State Stanislaus.

BIG JUMP
Cal State L.A.’s Josh Como has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association male track and field athlete of the week.

The junior from Riverside City College posted an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark of 53-0.25 in the triple jump while winning the event at the Ben Brown Invitational Saturday at Cal State Fullerton. It was the second straight week Como recorded an automatic qualifying mark in the event and the 53-foot jump is a new personal best.

Como has the top mark in NCAA Division II by almost four feet and his mark is No. 3 on Cal State L.A.’s all-time list.

He also ran the third leg on Cal State L.A.’s 4 by 100 relay team that won with a time of 40.70. That time is an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark and is currently best in the nation.
