BASKETBALL
Tyson Chandler (Dominguez High School) and Russell Westbrook (Leuzinger, UCLA) have been named to the 12-man Team USA FIBA World Championship roster.

Jerry Colangelo, chairman for USA Basketball, made the announcement Tuesday.

The roster also includes Lamar Odom of the Lakers, Eric Gordon of the Clippers, Kevin Love (UCLA) of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls.

Rounding out the squad are Chauncey Billups of the Denver Nuggets, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies, Danny Granger of the Indiana Pacers and Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia 76ers.

The World Championships are from Saturday to Sept. 12 in Turkey.

FOOTBALL
Former Leuzinger High School star Mark Rodgers, who began his college football career at West Virginia, has been cleared to play at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

The junior slotback signed a scholarship offer in February, attended summer classes and completed all the necessary paperwork last week to become eligible.

Last year as a running back and return specialist at West Virginia, he averaged 22.9 yards on 27 kickoff returns. His long return was a 51-yarder against Florida State.

Rodgers, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, rushed for 4,819 yards and 50 touchdowns his final two seasons at Leuzinger.

He was a two-time All-Wave Newspapers selection

BASKETBALL
Lacy Ramon, a 6-foot-1 forward from Mercer University, has joined the women’s basketball program at Cal State L.A.
Ramon was Mercer’s third-leading scorer at 8.6 points and number two rebounder at 5.3 per game last season.

“Lacy is a very smart and crafty player at the forward position,” CSULA coach Janell Jones said. “She can step out and hit the three, take it off the dribble and score around the basket. Her knowledge of the game on both ends of the floor and her competitive spirit make her a valuable asset to the team. Lacy does the little things to win a game, things that may not show up on a stat sheet, but are things coaches love in a player.”

Ramon had a career-high 20 points and 15 rebounds against Stetson Jan. 21, 2010. She followed that up with a 20-point performance against Florida Gulf Coast.

She is a native of Norman, Okla.

BASKETBALL
Leora Juster, a two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association MVP and two-time NCAA Division II All-American at UC San Diego, has been named an assistant coach with the Cal State L.A. women’s basketball program.

“Players who understand basketball and have a great passion for the game tend to make great coaches,” Jones said. “That’s the case with Leora. Her success as a player both with the team and as an individual will be a great asset to building a winning program here at Cal State L.A.”

Most recently, she taught and coached the boys soccer team at Crozier Middle School in Inglewood.

SOCCER
USC midfielder and 2009 leading scorer Alyssa Dávila is a candidate for the 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for her work off the field.

To be eligible for the award, players must be an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas — community, classroom, character and competition. Dávila is a member of numerous volunteer organizations and projects around USC and the community and is part of the campus Christian group, Athletes in Action.
