Long Beach Poly High School, which has a 79-game league winning streak, and Lakewood, which has the talent to knock off the Jackrabbits, are seen as the class of the Moore League.
Lakewood, third-ranked in the state in maxpreps.com’s preseason poll, is a serious threat to Poly’s run of titles because of its returning skill talent, led by quarterback Jesse Scroggins (USC commit) and wide receiver Kevin Anderson.
But Compton (7-2), which tied for second and was eliminated in the first round by Notre Dame, has designs on the league title and a longer run in the CIF-SS Pac-5 Division playoffs.
The Tarbabes’ double wing-T offense is built around talented running back James McConico (6-1, 200), who rushed for 1,234 yards and averaged an amazing 19.9 yards per carry. Half of the Pac-10 schools, as well as Nebraska and Colorado are recruiting the speedster.
This is no one-man team, by any means.
Bryant Hayes (5-7, 155) will be another of the running backs and play in the secondary. Hayes and Chris Jones lead what should be a strong secondary. Sophomore Roger Jones will also play running back and in the secondary.
There is plenty of size on the line with Jerrell Gordon (6-3, 330) anchoring the defensive front.
Eduardo Nevarez (6-5, 345), Johnny Madera (6-0, 245) and Servando Marquez (6-2, 269) will be providing the holes on the offensive line. Josiah Marshall (6-1, 190), a linebacker on defense, is the tight end.
Donald Jackson (6-4, 195), who transferred from Texas, will help at defensive back and tight end.
DEL REY LEAGUE
Only Oaks Christian spoiled Serra’s 2008 season, and that wasn’t until the CIF-SS Northwest Division title game.
Don’t be surprised if the Gardena school makes another strong run at the title, though if it does, it can expect to run into Oaks Christian again.
The Cavaliers, defending champions of the Del Rey League, should be just as talented as last year’s 13-1 squad.
For starters, there’s a receiving corps second to none.
Senior Robert Woods, who has already verballed to USC, is rated the 16th best player in the nation by rivals.com. He had 81 receptions for 1,378 yards and 19 touchdowns a year ago. He’s also a force in the secondary and as a kick returner.
The remainder of the receiving corps includes junior George Farmer (31 receptions) and senior Paul Richardson, a transfer from Los Alamitos. Each is being heavily recruited.
Throwing them passes is Palisades transfer Connor Preston (6-2, 200).
Domonique McGee is the top returning running back.
Jason Gibson (6-3, 215) is a standout on the defensive line.
CAMINO REAL LEAGUE
Verbum Dei (5-5) has a new coach in James Durk as it attempts to defend its Camino Real League title.
It won’t be easy because the Eagles suffered defections through transfers. There are only five returning starters on offense and three on defense.
Senior Fred Edison (5-8, 150) is a returning all-league wide receiver who caught 47 passes a year ago.
Darryl Williams (6-1, 195), a senior outside linebacker and tight end, and senior cornerback Joshua Rodriguez (5-10, 175) are other top returnees.
Cantwell Sacred Heart (6-4) relies on experienced players on both lines and a veteran defense.
New coach Kim Taylor’s Cardinals are led by junior quarterback/defensive back Christian Espinoza, junior two-way lineman Steven Silva (6-1, 270) and senior linebacker Mark DeLuna (5-10, 185).
Bosco Tech (4-6) returns five starters on offense and three on defense.
They include running back Johnny Calderon (5-9, 175), tight end Marvin Morales (5-9, 180) and fullback Jesus Pasten (5-10, 185).
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LEAGUE
Last season was rough for Dominguez, which went through a coaching change in midseason, then going 2-8 and missing the playoffs.
Willie Donerson is back as head coach and son, Keith, is back as offensive coordinator, so some stability has returned to the program.
Because of losses through graduation and transfers, depth will be an issue.
The Dons, who operate out of the run-dominated wing-T, will need productive seasons from junior running backs Will Gregory and Aaron Williams. Junior Chris Brown, a transfer from Narbonne, is the new quarterback.
Two-way linemen Darren Patterson (6-3, 240) and Reginald Woods (6-1, 245) are returnees up front.
Elsewhere around the league, Warren has to be considered the favorite with the return of tailback Jesse Callier (2,466 yards rushing, 30 TDs) and wide receiver Bailey Cowins. Downey is a threat throwing the ball with Steven Cervantes (1,750 yards) triggering the offense.
Lynwood returns its quarterback James Grisom. Gahr loses it prolific quarterback Corey Nielson to graduation, but brother, Casey moves up from the JVs to take his spot. Paramount looks to improve on a 4-6 mark (0-5 in league) with more consistency. Senior linebacker David Lee Kitchen and quarterback Josh Perea are two of the key players for the Pirates.
PIONEER LEAGUE
Centennial (1-9) counts on some talented skill players to improve on the last-place finish in the Pioneer League of a year ago.
Second-year coach Eric Scott has a pair of talented senior wide receivers in Kurt Davis (6-5, 200) and Kevin Smith (6-2, 195).
Quarterback Nelson Gammage (5-11, 180) is one of seven returning starters on offense. Thomas Street (5-10, 165) returns as the top running back.
Defensively, Street, Smith and Gammage head the secondary.
David Bridges (6-0, 170), Darnell O’Banner (6-2, 200) and Leonard Graham (6-1, 215) are the linebackers.
Up front, C.J. Harris (6-1, 275) and Wesley Perkins (6-4, 240) give the Apaches plenty of size for other teams to contend with.
Lawndale (5-5) is strong at the skill positions, but lacks depth on the lines.
Quarterback Aaron Belton and running back Jamal Fleming lead the way. Belton threw for 633 yards and seven TDs and Fleming rushed for 596 yards and eight scores a year ago. Marco Ramirez anchors the offensive line.
Elsewhere around the league, El Segundo and North Torrance are probably the teams to beat. They shared the title last year. El Segundo made a deep run in the Northwest Division playoffs before losing, 35-28 to Serra.
OCEAN LEAGUE
Morningside (3-7) can rely on experienced skill players to improve on last year’s season.
It starts with junior quarterback Isaac Charles (5-11, 174), who passed for 680 yards and eight touchdowns with 10 interceptions a year ago. It also helps he has his leading receivers returning in Roymel Brooks (13 catches for 285 yards), Keynan Burke (nine for 128) and Sheldon Lockett (eight for 118). Lockett, also the strong safety, had two interceptions a year ago.
The top running back, Antonio Wilson, also returns. He ran for 674 yards and six scores in 2008. Junior running back Trevon Shavers also returns.
Pulupaki Fifita (5-10, 230) anchors the defensive line for the Monarchs. Linebacker Marcus Victorain (6-1, 190) led the Ocean League with 10 sacks a year ago.
Inglewood (5-5) should have a good passing game with quarterback Shashawn Alexander (5-11, 165) at the helm. James Grace (6-2, 205) is the top returning wide receiver. He will also play safety.
Junior running back/cornerback Kyle Evans (5-11, 175) is a key two-way player.
Coach Charles Mincy likes the overall athleticism of the team. Youth on the line is an area of concern.
The Sentinels, who lost standout wide receiver Shaquelle Evans (now at Notre Dame) to graduation, return seven starters on offense and four on defense.
Hawthorne (0-10) tries to make the long climb back to being competitive, which won’t be easy in this league.
Coach James Swain does return some key people, notably senior quarterback/defensive back Noel Campos (5-11, 185) and senior linebacker/offensive lineman Adrian Lopez (6-1, 230), his two captains. Campos threw for 221 yards last year.
Other returnees include wide receiver/defensive back Roy Lewis, running back/defensive back Richard White, wide receiver/cornerback Jermelle Chappell, wide receiver Devonte Sims and tight end/linebacker Dominique Flagg.
Santa Monica (8-3) returns four offensive and six defensive starters from a team that tied for third a year ago.
Senior quarterback Garrett Safron is a returning starter. Keelan Malone is the main running back.
Senior quarterback Marquel Carter returns to lead a Culver City team that went 8-4 and shared the league title. Senior tailback Edward Tillman and senior running back Victor Burnett fill out the backfield.
Beverly Hills (8-4), which shared the title with Culver City, returns running back/defensive back Kenny Basset and defensive end/tight end Greg Townsend.
BAY LEAGUE
Leuzinger (6-4) looks to a strong passing attack to improve on last year’s fifth-place finish in the Bay League.
The Olympians return quarterback Teshon Burton (6-3, 195), who passed for a league-best 1,546 yards with 11 touchdowns a year ago. His main target figures to be Tony Sawyer (6-0, 175), who also plays corner. Sawyer caught 30 passes for 416 yards and two TDs last season.
Defensively, Leuzinger is led by all-league linebacker Taumoelau Kavienga (5-11, 210), who recorded 98 solo tackles and six assists a year ago.
