Downey slips by La Serna

Steven Cervantes directed a late drive, capping it with a game-winning touchdown pass to Isaac Dan to lift Downey High School past La Serna, 17-13 in a nonleague football game at Whittier College.

It was the season opener for the Vikings, who host Schurr (1-0) Friday. Schurr opened its season with a 20-7 win over Burbank Burroughs.

Cervantes, who completed 16 of 24 for 179 yards and two scores, kept the drive going with a seven-yard pass on fourth-and-one to Jabari Ruffin. He then completed a 45-yarder to Dan to give the Vikings a first down at the five. Cervantes then completed the scoring pass with four minutes left.

Downey also scored on an 11-yard pass from Cervantes to Joseph Ortiz and a 35-yard field goal by Tony Roman. Ortiz rushed for 102 yards on 12 carries.

Defensively, Daniel O’Veal had seven solo tackles and four assists for the Vikings. Justin Haro had three solos and 12 assists. Brandon Saunders returned an interception 43 yards.

Aaron Cantu completed 17 of 26 passes for 212 yards, including a scoring pass to tight end Mark Avila as Schurr topped Burroughs.

Nick Castillo led the Spartans on the ground with 76 yards and a TD on 22 carries.

Schurr limited Burroughs to 144 yards of total offense.

Art Franco rushed for 239 yards and a TD on 23 carries as El Rancho defeated Cerritos, 21-14.

The Dons (2-0), who host Bell Gardens Friday, rolled up 346 yards on the ground. Joshua Lopez added 88 yards and a TD on 14 carries and quarterback Troy Campos ran for a score.

Steve Ibarra rushed for 182 yards and a TD on 10 carries and Josh Adame was 7-of-12 for 137 yards and two scores passing as Bell Gardens rolled past Azusa, 34-6 in a nonleague game. The Lancers led, 28-0 at halftime.

Chris Gutierrez (three catches for 101 yards) was on the receiving end of both scoring passes. Justin Munoz also ran for a TD.

Isaac Valdez was 12-of-31 for 171 yards passing and ran for a pair of scores to lead San Gabriel (1-1) past South Pasadena, 27-11.

Fabian Amaro also had a big night for San Gabriel with 142 yards and two TDs on 16 carries and four receptions for 43 yards. Mark Covarrubias added 78 yards rushing on three attempts.

Baldwin Park edged Montebello, 20-14 despite another big rushing performance by the Oilers Joseph Marron.

Marron carried 27 times for 177 yards and a TD, giving him 323 yards rushing in two games for Montebello (1-1). Quarterback Dylan

Gomez was 9-of-14 for 96 yards through the air.

Johnny Calderon carried 21 times for 190 yards and a TD in Bosco Tech’s 35-6 win over Blair. Calderon also had an interception on defense.

Dillon Welsh had scoring passes to Victor Romero and Jeren Cuevas and Devon Welsh rushed for 93 yards and a TD for Bosco Tech (2-0).

Steven Lavin rushed for 96 yards and a TD on 14 carries as Cantwell Sacred Heart opened its season with a 14-6 win over Bishop Montgomery. The Cardinals did all their scoring in the first half.

Quarterback Lawrence Hill ran for two scores and Anthony Downing, Jr. ran for 90 yards and a TD as Paramount opened with a 38-23 victory over Long Beach Cabrillo.

Defensively, Ariel Arguelo was in on 11 tackles and Guillermo Madrigal was in on 10 for the winning Pirates.

Adrian Gonzales ran for 179 yards and two TDs on 12 carries and Billy Moore ran for 107 yards and three scores on 12 attempts as Norwalk (2-0) crushed Los Amigos, 58-6. Adrian Cortez added 89 yards and a TD on four carries as the Lancers built a 37-0 lead by halftime.

Glenn (2-0) routed Pioneer, 38-3 in a nonleague game.

St. Paul defeated Garfield, 22-7 in another nonleague game. The Swordsmen held Garfield without an offensive touchdown.

St. Paul (1-1) is at Pioneer Friday.
