Cantwell Sacred Heart High School built a nine-point lead, then held on to edge stubborn Salesian, 16-14 Friday in a nonleague football game.
The Cardinals, who take a 2-0 record into Friday’s game with Santa Clara, got solid performances from running back Steven Lavin and quarterback Christian Espinoza.
Lavin carried 29 times for 127 yards and a touchdown and Espinoza was 10-of-22 for 98 yards, including a scoring pass to Adam Aguirre.
Salesian, now 2-1, led early on a scoring run by Evan Bracken.
Bracken, who carried 12 times for 130 yards, scoring on a 65-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to trim the Cantwell lead to two points.
The Mustangs hurt themselves with nearly 200 yards in penalties.
“That’s what turned the game,” Salesian assistant coach Devah Thomas said.
Salesian hosts La Verne Lutheran Friday.

Darrian Cazarin was 18-of-28 for 303 yards and two touchdowns to lead Alhambra past Temple City, 17-14 in nonleague action.
Cazarin threw scoring passes to Joseph Becerra (six catches for 108 yards) and Vailele Peko (two for 59). Mitchell Crockom led the Moors (1-1) with eight receptions for 117 yards.
Alex Lopez gave the Moors an early 3-0 lead with a 25-yard field goal. Peko went 48 yards with a Cazarin pass with 17 seconds left in the third period and Becerra hauled in a 25-yard scoring pass with 8:44 remaining in the game.

Leading rusher Joseph Marron went down with an injury on the third play and it only got worse from there for Montebello, which lost to Rowland, 42-12.
Josh Ononughe led Rowland (2-0) with 202 yards and two TDs on 17 carries. Michael Ball was 7-of-11 for 118 yards and three TDs passing.
Eric Espinoza picked up the slack for the absence of Marron by carrying 25 times for 162 yards and a TD.
Defensively for the Oilers (1-2), Josh Curiel had six solo tackles and four assists.
Montebello is at El Rancho Friday.

Adam Colman passed for 226 yards and five TDs to lead Burbank past San Gabriel, 40-28.
Colman’s performance overshadowed one by San Gabriel’s Isaac Valdez, who was 21-of-40 for 303 yards and three TDs.
Mark Covarrubias also had a huge game for San Gabriel (1-2) with nine catches for 181 yards and two TDs and four kickoff returns for 100 yards. Andres Fernandez also caught a scoring pass for the Matadors.
