Verbum Dei High School has run the ball effectively in previous games. Now the passing attack appears to be an area opponents have to reckon with.
Darryl Williams completed 11 of 15 passes for 274 yards and five touchdowns, three of the scores to returning All-Camino Real League wide receiver Fred Edison, in a 55-21 nonleague victory over Lawndale. Edison also returned a punt 48 yards for a score.
Their production complemented that of sophomore tailback Anthony Charles, who carried 16 times for 117 yards to push his season rushing totals past the 500-yard mark.
“We finally opened up the passing game and with some proficiency,” Eagles coach James Durk said. “Now we have some balance.”
The Eagles, who take a 2-2 record into Saturday’s 5 p.m. nonleague game at St. Bernard, also received some superb defensive efforts.
Cornerback Ashton Whyte had 13 tackles, end Ty’Vion Jackson had 12 tackles and two sacks and strong safety Sean McCormick had eight tackles. Middle linebacker Terrence Harper had 10 tackles.
“Our defense has shown progress from the first week to now,” the coach said. “This is the kind of progress we want to see going into league.”
Verbum Dei opens Camino Real League play Oct. 17 against La Salle.
