Schurr defeats Whittier

Nick Castillo’s big second half lifted Schurr High School to a 24-7 victory over Whittier Thursday to close out the nonleague portion of the football schedule for both teams.

Schurr takes a record of 3-1-1 into its Oct. 16 Almont League opener against Alhambra. Whittier (3-2) opens Del Rio League play the same day against California.

Castillo, who rushed for 155 yards, did most of his damage after intermission. His three-yard touchdown run in the fourth period opened up a 10-point lead for the Spartans.

Aaron Cantu threw a 22-yard scoring pass to Angel Sanchez for the final points of the night. It was the second time that night the duo hooked up for a TD pass.

Whittier scored in the first half on a nine-yard run by Bryan Carrillo.

St. Francis 42, El Rancho 7
St. Francis raced to a 28-0 lead by halftime and went on to defeat El Rancho, 42-7 Thursday in a nonleague game.

Dietrich Riley rushed for 104 yards and scored a pair of TDs to lead the Golden Knights.

El Rancho (3-2) opens Del Rio League play Oct. 16 against Pioneer.
