Vista Murrieta runs past Warren

It took the state’s 10th-ranked football team to hand Warren High School its first loss.

Vista Murrieta (5-0), in the 10th spot in Maxpreps.com’s poll this week, defeated the Bears, 42-28 last Friday in a nonleague game.

The Bears, who open San Gabriel Valley League play Friday at Dominguez, are 4-1.

They moved the ball well themselves, but couldn’t stop the Broncos.

Jesse Callier had a big game in defeat, carrying 16 times for 149 yards and returning four kickoffs for 146 yards, including a long of 86 yards.

Quarterback Sam Bettancourt was 15-of-23 for 180 yards and two touchdowns, both to Bailey Cowins (six catches for 96 yards). Jamil Magee ran for a pair of TDs for Warren.

Kevin Cabrera led the Bears on defense with seven solo tackles and three assists.

Desmond Williams carried 11 times for 205 yards and two TDs and James Grisom passed for 114 yards and three scores to lead Lynwood (3-2) to a 55-20 rout of Lawndale in a nonleague game. Williams also recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score and Grisom ran for a TD.

Now on a three-game winning streak, the Knights host Paramount Friday at Lynwood Middle School in a San Gabriel Valley League opener.

Larreon White carried 12 times for 119 yards and a TD and Benny Perez carried 11 times for 109 yards and two scores to lead Bellflower past Artesia, 31-7 in a Suburban League game.

Isaac Lee had a pair of interceptions for the Bucs (1-5, 1-1). Artesia is 0-5, 0-1.

Bellflower hosts Mayfair (2-4, 2-0) Friday. The Monsoons defeated Glenn, 46-24 in their last outing. It was the 51st consecutive league win for them.

Dejon Bernard led Glenn (3-3, 0-2) with 65 yards rushing and 73 on four receptions. He played receiver, running back and quarterback.

Glenn takes on Norwalk (5-0) at Excelsior Stadium Friday. The Lancers had a bye last week.
