Cantu-led Schurr slips past Alhambra

Aaron Cantu threw three touchdown passes to Carlos Arredondo to lift Schurr High School past Alhambra last Friday in an Almont League football opener.

The Spartans, who play at Keppel Friday, improved to 3-3 overall. Alhambra, which is at Montebello Friday, is 3-2.

Cantu connected with Arredondo on scoring passes of 14 and 20 yards in the first half for a 14-0 lead. Then with the Spartans trailing, his nine-yard scoring toss to Arredondo with 2:48 left tied the score at 21-all.

Then with 43 seconds remaining, Nick Castillo’s three-yard capped a final drive and gave Schurr the victory.

The Moors came back before halftime when Darrian Cazarin threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Crockom.

In the third period, Crockom threw a scoring pass of his own, a four-yarder to Dominic Gonzalez to tie the score. Then Brandon Wilson’s one-yard run gave the Moors a temporary lead.

Schurr’s defense made it tough on Cazarin, who was 7 of 24 for 94 yards with three interceptions.

Elsewhere in the Almont League, San Gabriel defeated Keppel, 21-7 behind Isaac Valdez, who completed 15 of 21 passes for 200 yards and a TD. The scoring pass went to Mark Covarrubias (seven catches for 102 yards).

Fabian Amaro rushed for 50 yards and two TDs for the Matadors, who are 3-3 overall. They are at Bell Gardens (5-1) Friday.

Edson Gomez scored the lone TD for Keppel (1-5) on a three-yard run in the first half.

In the other league game, Bell Gardens outlasted Montebello, 40-26.

The Oilers dropped to 2-4.

Del Rio League
Josh Perea passed for 208 yards and three TDs and ran for another score in El Rancho’s 43-7 rout of Pioneer in a Del Rio League opener. Perea completed seven of 13 passes.

Art Franco caught four passes for 121 yards and two scores and carried 15 times for 58 yards for the Dons, now 4-2. Anthony Ayala (three catches for 87 yards) also caught a scoring pass and Ronnell Lone rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries.

Pioneer dropped to 2-4.

Camino Real League
Mary Star handed Bosco Tech a 28-13 setback in a Camino Real League opener.

Tech’s Dillon Welsh passed for 153 yards, but was intercepted twice.

Jesus Pasten was in on 15 tackles, nine of them solo, for Tech (3-3).

Santa Fe League
Andrew Romero rushed for 238 yards on 23 carries and Tyquion Ballard ran for 154 yards on 13 attempts and scored twice as Salesian toppled St. Monica, 41-18 in a Santa Fe League opener.

Miguel Rodriguez kicked two field goals, one a 49-yarder, for the Mustangs (5-2). Salesian returns to action Oct. 30 at St. Anthony.

Nonleague
Anthony Jefferson returned an interception 65 yards for a TD and a punt 68 yards for another score to lead Cathedral (6-0) to a 32-14 nonleague victory over Cantwell Sacred Heart (3-3).

The Cardinals did a solid job defensively, intercepting three passes and limiting Cathedral quarterback Trevor Olson to 11 of 24 for 126 yards.

Kristaan Ivory rushed for 105 yards and two TDs for the Phantoms.

Cantwell quarterback Christian Espinoza was 15 of 30 for 161 yards and TDs to Adam Aguirre and James Becerra. Steven Lavin carried 22 times for 101 yards.

City Section
Northern League

Carlos Duran rushed for 200 yards and three TDs on 27 carries to lift Lincoln past Belmont, 35-27 in a Northern League opener.

The Tigers (2-4 overall) also got 115 yards passing and a TD run from Caleb Cabrera and four catches for 60 yards from Andrew Medrano. Medrano was active on defense, recording 11 solo tackles and three assists.

Edgar Aguilar rushed for 102 yards and two TDs and caught three passes for 76 yards and another score for Belmont (3-3).

Franklin (4-1) completely shut down Wilson (1-5) for a 37-0 victory.

The Panthers limited Wilson quarterback Luke Moreno to 60 yards through the air and the ground game to 41 yards.

Marshall defeated Eagle Rock, 35-7 in the other league game.
