Tougher games in the future certainly await the Dorsey High School football team, namely a Nov. 6 showdown at Crenshaw that most likely will be for the Coliseum League title.

Crenshaw, similarly, doesn’t figure to be tested much either until then if its league opener is any indication. Facing improved Manual Arts last Friday, the Cougars romped, 67-0.

Still positives, if not much competition, could be gleaned from last Friday’s 50-0 rout of visiting Jefferson.

The main positive was that it was a victory and it counts in the standings for the Dons, 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league. They host Manual Arts (3-3, 0-1) Friday.

“The way we look at it and what we told our kids, was that we were playing for first place today,” Dorsey coach Paul Knox said. “That’s what we’ll tell them every week. Our goal is to win league.”

A one-sided game such as this, in which they led, 43-0 at the half and had a running clock in the second half, allowed the coaches to experiment a bit and use the entire roster.

“A lot of kids got to play, especially some kids who normally don’t get into the game,” he said. “We tried some things, too, just to see how they worked in a real game.”

The Dons were coming off a loss at San Diego Mira Mesa in which the defense gave up a lot of yardage, especially on the ground. That was an area Knox wanted to address and he felt the team showed progress against Jefferson (1-4).

“We’re trying to get better defensively and I think we are,” he said.

Because so many players saw action, the statistics were spread out among a number of players.

Joseph Gray (6 of 6 for 107 yards and a touchdown) and Brandon Edwards (3 of 4 for 81 yards and a TD) split time at quarterback. Each ran for a score.

Jorrian Washington carried only three times, but netted 83 yards, 67 on a single run, and scored a second-half TD from two yards out.

Jaydon Mickens had two catches for 66 yards and a 59-yard kickoff return to open the game. Robert Herron had two catches for 55 yards and a TD and two rushes for 40 yards. Charles Garrett returned an interception 25 yards for a TD and Devonte Anderson returned a fumble 13 yards for another score.

In other Coliseum League openers, Crenshaw ran its record to 6-0 with a 67-0 thrashing of Manual Arts (3-3) and Locke (3-3) outlasted Fremont, 35-27. The Pathfinders are 0-6.

Crenshaw is not only the top-ranked team in the City, but is No. 4 in maxpreps.com’s state poll and No. 1 in the Southern California Division II ratings that are partly used to determine participants in the postseason bowl games.

Friday’s schedule has Jefferson at Locke at 3 p.m. and Crenshaw at Fremont at 7.

Marine League
Carson’s 71-0 rout of Washington to open the Marine League saw Daniel Torres (eight carries for 100 yards) and Dion Willis (10 carries for 81 yards) each score three touchdowns for the Colts (4-2).

The defense recorded eight sacks, three by Daniel Acevedo.

Banning defeated Gardena, 29-18 and Narbonne edged San Pedro, 23-22 in the other league openers.

Eastern League
Returning All-City players Deshawn Beck and Patrick Wooten again made major contributions in Jordan’s 41-14 Eastern League victory over South Gate.

Beck carried 12 times for 159 yards, was 2 of 3 for 38 yards and a TD passing and also caught a scoring pass.

Wooten caught two scoring passes and was in on 15 tackles, seven of them solo, on defense.

Other contributors included Jackyle Cooper, who was 8 of 14 for 120 yards and two TDs and ran for another score, Raymond Ford, who caught a scoring pass, Rudolph Drayton, who had seven solo tackles and two sacks.

Jordan (3-4, 2-1) is at South East (3-3, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday. South East and Roosevelt (5-1, 2-0) share first place, with Jordan and Bell (5-1, 2-1) tied for second.

Southern League
Karrington Jones was 5 of 10 for 126 yards and one TD and ran for another score to lead West Adams Prep (5-1, 2-0) to a 49-0 rout of Hollywood (5-2, 2-1) in a Southern League contest.
Terrence Montgomery threw a 60-yard scoring pass and caught a pair of TD passes. He had four receptions for 97 yards.

Fred Adkins carried 11 times for 163 yards and three scores.

Santee (4-2, 2-0) dropped a 41-24 nonleague decision at Spanish Springs, Nev., although Tevin Carter put on a show in a losing cause.

The Cal-bound wide receiver caught eight passes for 183 yards, returned a kickoff 90 yards for a TD and was in on nine tackles on defense.

Santee quarterback Patrick Tyler completed 12 of 24 for 228 yards and a TD and also ran for a score.
