The San Gabriel Valley League football title will be on the line Friday at Gahr when first-place Warren visits the Gladiators. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Led by standout tailback Jesse Callier, the Bears take marks of 7-1 overall and 3-0 in league into the contest. Gahr, paced by Casey Nielsen, one of the state’s leading passers, is 5-3, 2-1. The Gladiators are tied for second with Downey.
Callier has rushed for 2,011 yards and scored 29 touchdowns in leading the Bears to their fast start. He ran for 289 yards and five scores in last Friday’s 49-24 rout of Paramount.
Bailey Cowins, who caught a TD pass from Sam Bettancourt last week, is the other major threat for Warren.
Nielsen, who has thrown for 3,076 yards and 25 TDs, leads the way for Gahr. He threw for 460 yards and five TDs in last week’s 43-21 win over Lynwood. Shaan Johnson (nine catches for 130 yards, two TDs last week) has been his favorite target all year.
Downey (3-5, 2-1), a 21-15 loser to Dominguez last week, hosts Lynwood (4-4, 1-2) Friday.
In the loss to Dominguez, Steven Cervantes passed for 219 yards and a TD for the Vikings. Joseph Ortiz rushed for 45 yards and caught five passes for another 64 yards. Isaac Daan caught five passes for 89 yards and a TD.
Dominguez (2-5, 1-2) is at Paramount (2-6, 0-3) in the other SGVL game.
Suburban League
Bellflower (2-6, 2-2) travels to Suburban League-leading La Mirada (7-1, 4-0) Friday.
The Bucs are coming off a 41-17 victory over Cerritos, a game in which Jeremy Allen threw a pair of scoring passes. Marquist Patton led the defense with 10 tackles and an interception return for a TD.
Del Rio League
Justin Rincon passed for 231 yards and three TDs to lead Santa Fe (6-2, 2-1) past El Rancho, 21-3 in a Del Rio League game. Rincon’s scoring passes went to Roman Meza, Cameron Oliver and Andrew Jackson.
The only points for El Rancho (4-4, 1-2) were on a 27-yard field goal by Lenny Leyva.
Santa Fe hosts California at Pioneer Friday. El Rancho takes on La Serna at Cal Thursday.
Eastern League
Deshawn Beck passed for 246 yards and one TD and ran for 178 yards and a score to lead Jordan past Bell, 13-12 in a pivotal Eastern League game.
Jordan is 5-4 overall and 4-1 in league and trails only Roosevelt (7-1, 4-0) in the standings. Bell slipped to 5-3 and 2-3.
Although Beck had a big game statistically, he was intercepted three times (by David Franco, Juan Gonzalez and Robert Soliz). Franco was also on the receiving end of a 41-yard scoring pass from Adrian Lopez (9-of-16 for 119 yards).
Julian Leon (12 carries, 50 yards) had a three-yard scoring run for the Eagles.
In other league games, Roosevelt routed South Gate, 41-6 and Garfield blanked South East, 18-0.
