The destiny of the Jordan High School football team is only partly in its own hands with two weeks left in the regular season.
For Jordan (5-4, 4-1), it has only one more regular-season contest, Friday’s 2:15 p.m. home game with Huntington Park (3-5, 1-3), to keep its Eastern League playoff hopes alive.
The Bulldogs are a game out of first place behind Roosevelt (7-1, 4-0), which faces archrival Garfield (4-4, 2-2) Friday at East L.A. College, then closes the regular season next week at South East (3-5, 2-2).
A year ago, Jordan, Roosevelt and Garfield all shared the league title. Jordan, which would need some help to be co-champion this year, lost to Roosevelt earlier this season.
Thanks to an outstanding season by senior Deshawn Beck, the Bulldogs are finishing strong again.
Beck has rushed for 1,530 yards and seven touchdowns on 134 carries and completed 51 of 98 passes for 785 yards and five scores.
In last Friday’s 13-12 victory over Bell (5-3, 2-3), Beck completed 16 of 27 passes for 246 yards and a TD and carried 14 times for 178 yards and a score.
Defensive back Patrick Wooten, who earned All-City honors as a freshman after recording a section-best 150 tackles, had nine solo tackles, assisted on five others and intercepted a pass against Bell. Defensive lineman Trayronn Archer had 10 tackles and two sacks.
Southern League
West Adams Prep (7-1, 4-0) and Santee (6-2, 4-0) figure to determine the Southern League champion when they square off Nov. 13 in the regular-season finale. West Adams is the defending league champion.
Santee, however, has the league’s best player in Tevin Carter, a nationally-ranked player who has committed to California.
He had 157 yards and a TD on six receptions and a 50-yard punt return for a score in last week’s 60-6 rout of Los Angeles. For the season, the 6-3, 190-pound Carter has 39 catches for 1,080 yards and eight TDs and has two other TDs on kick returns.
Steven Cross rushed for 177 yards and five TDs against L.A.
Pioneer League
The Pioneer League race is headed to a final week showdown between co-leaders, Centennial and Lawndale, both 3-0.
Centennial (5-3 overall) stayed unbeaten in league with a 20-14 victory over South Torrance. Nelson Gammage was 13-of-17 for 185 yards and two TDs passing and Leonard Graham ran for a score to lead the Apaches, who host Torrance Friday and Lawndale Nov. 13.
Lawndale (5-3) routed Torrance, 49-31 as Damien Bell rushed for 186 yards and three TDs and returned a kickoff 93 yards for another score. Jamal Fleming added 148 yards and two scores on the ground.
Lawndale hosts El Segundo Friday.
Ocean League
Shashaun Alexander passed for 298 yards, including a 68-yard scoring pass to Derrick Woods (eight catches for 182 yards) with less than two minutes left to secure a 22-14 victory for Inglewood over Beverly Hills in Ocean League play.
Jonathan Dewitt rushed for 158 yards and two scores for the Sentinels (5-3, 2-1).
Morningside (2-6, 1-2) got three rushing TDs from Antonio Wilson in a 30-6 victory over Hawthorne (0-8, 0-3). Quarterback Isaac Charles also ran for a score for the Monarchs.
Culver City (7-1, 3-0) remained unbeaten in the Ocean League with a 49-28 win over Santa Monica.
Del Rey League
The Del Rey League title will likely be decided Nov. 13 when Serra (8-0, 3-0) and Cathedral (8-0, 2-0) meet at Serra.
The Cavaliers crushed St. Bernard, 63-13 in their most recent game as Conner Preston threw for 248 yards and four TDs and Paul Richardson caught three passes for 128 yards and two scores to lead the way. George Farmer and Lindsey Anderson also caught scoring passes.
Cathedral won 34-9 over Bishop Montgomery as Trevor Olson passed for 147 yards and two scores and Anthony Jefferson had a rushing TD.
