Cantwell Sacred Heart High School is apparently a second-half team.
At least the Cardinals were last Friday, exploding for 31 points after intermission to defeat Bosco Tech, 43-21 in a Camino Real League football game.
Now 4-4 overall and 1-1 in league, the Cardinals are at La Salle Friday. Bosco Tech (4-4, 0-3) hosts Del Rey League team Serra (8-0).
Junior quarterback Christian Espinoza threw five touchdown passes, four to Adam Aguirre as Cantwell broke open a game it was leading 12-0 at the half. Espinoza was 11-of-18 for 264 yards and Aguirre caught four for 164 yards.
Mark DeLuna, who had four receptions for 84 yards, also caught a TD pass.
Tailback Steven Lavin complemented the air attack with 16 carries for 98 yards and two scores.
Devon Welsh (17 carries for 59 yards), Johnny Calderon (14 for 69) and Jesus Pasten scored Bosco Tech’s TDs. Calderon also caught four passes for 78 yards and was in on 11 tackles on defense.
Almont League
Sole possession of first place in the Almont League will be on the line when Schurr (6-1-1, 3-0) visits San Gabriel (5-3, 3-0) Friday.
Both teams feature strong passing attacks.
Aaron Cantu passed for 258 yards and four TDs in Schurr’s 34-12 victory over Montebello last Friday. Chris Chairmonte and Carlos Arredondo each caught two scoring passes and Nick Castillo scored on a three-yard for the Spartans.
In San Gabriel’s 52-14 rout of Alhambra, Isaac Valdez was 22-of-36 for 324 yards and four TDs. Valdez has thrown for 2,033 yards and 14 TDs for the year.
Alex Lopez had eight catches for 100 yards to lead the Matadors in that department. Mark Covarrubias had a TD reception.
In other Almont games Friday, Bell Gardens (6-2, 2-1) is at Alhambra (4-3, 1-2) and Keppel (1-7, 0-3) is at Montebello (2-6, 0-3).
The highlight for Montebello in its loss to Schurr was Joseph Marron carrying 19 times for 150 yards to running his season rushing totals to 887 yards. Josh Curiel ran 65 yards for a score to give the Oilers a brief 6-0 lead and quarterback Dylan Gomez later ran for a TD.
Alhambra got 186 yards and a TD passing from Darrian Cazarin and Mitchell Crockom caught five passes for 60 yards and the TD. Brandon Wilson had a scoring run.
Santa Fe League
Tyquion Ballard and Andrew Romero each rushed for 120 yards and Frank Beltran passed for 105 yards and two scores to lead Salesian past St. Anthony, 26-0 in a Santa Fe League game.
Ballard ran for a TD and caught a scoring pass and Michael Mora caught the other TD pass as the Mustangs improved to 2-6 overall and 2-0 in league. Miguel Rodriguez had a 49-yard field goal.
Salesian hosts Bell-Jeff (5-3, 1-1) Friday.
