Now that Schurr High School has first place in the Almont League to itself, it tries to clinch the title outright at home against Bell Gardens.
The Spartans (7-1-1, 4-0) hold a one-game lead over San Gabriel (5-4, 3-1) heading into Friday’s regular-season finales. They took over sole possession of the top spot last Friday with a 38-30 victory over San Gabriel.
The Matadors host Montebello (3-6, 1-3) and Keppel (1-8, 0-4) is at Alhambra (5-3, 2-2) in other league games Friday.
Junior quarterback Aaron Cantu has thrown for 1,695 yards and 20 touchdowns with just six interceptions for Schurr. His favorite target has been Carlos Arredondo, who has 53 catches for 789 yards and nine TDs.
Tailback Nicholas Castillo gives the Spartans a solid ground attack with 1,174 yards and seven TDs on 205 carries.
In the win over San Gabriel, Cantu completed 10 of 16 for 156 yards and two TDs and Arredondo caught six for 107 yards. Chris Chairmonte caught the other scoring pass.
Castillo ran for 191 yards and two scores on 28 carries.
Angel Sanchez kicked a 27-yard field goal.
Isaac Valdez had a sensational game for San Gabriel, completing 13 of 22 passes for 190 yards and a TD and carrying 12 times for 143 yards and two more scores. His scoring pass went to Mark Covarrubias (five catches, 89 yards).
Arthur Brown carried 15 times for 84 yards and a TD and Gilmer Tenes kicked a 21-yard field goal for the Matadors.

Darrian Cazarin teamed up with Mitchell Crockom on a 57-yard scoring pass with 4:19 left in the third quarter to lift Alhambra past Bell Gardens, 14-7.
Cazarin was 19-of-28 for 218 yards and Crockom caught eight for 111 yards.
Brandon Wilson’s one-yard run got the Moors on the scoreboard.
Bell Gardens (6-3, 2-2) scored in the third period on a 24-yard pass from Josh Adame to Josh Peraza.

Montebello amassed 330 yards on the ground in a 34-13 victory over Keppel.
Eric Espinosa rushed for 109 yards on 12 carries, Joseph Marron ran for 91 yards and three TDs on 17 attempts and Marcus Owens had 67 yards and a TD on 13 carries for the Oilers. Chris Huezo also had a rushing TD.
Roberto Garcia led the defense with 12 tackles, nine of them solos.
Camino Real League
Cantwell Sacred Heart (4-5, 1-2) will be playing for its playoff life when hosts first-place Verbum Dei (6-3, 3-0) Friday in Camino Real League play.
Verbum Dei took control of the league last Friday with its 28-25 victory over Mary Star (5-4, 3-1).
Cantwell, a 45-35 loser to La Salle (4-5, 1-2), is battling for the league’s third playoff berth.
The Cardinals lost a wild one last week when La Salle’s Michael Alexander rushed for 293 yards and three TDs and returned a kickoff 96 yards for a fourth score. Alexander, who had scoring runs of 68, 64 and 57 yards, had only 12 carries.
Christian Espinoza threw for 248 yards and a TD and carried 12 times for 133 yards and two TDs to lead Cantwell. Tailback Steven Lavin carried 14 times for 136 yards and two scores.
Adam Aguirre had a big night catching the ball with seven for 141 yards and a TD for the Cardinals.
