Schurr High School used two second-half touchdown passes from Aaron Cantu to get past El Rancho, 14-7 Friday in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division football playoffs.
The victory earns the Spartans (9-1-1) a second-round game at Diamond Ranch (6-5) Friday. Diamond Ranch, the Miramonte League runnerup, topped Burroughs of Burbank, 41-14 in the first round.
The Almont League champion Spartans found themselves trailing El Rancho 7-0 at the half on a scoring pass from Josh Perea (10 of 16 for 126 yards) to Anthony Ayala (six catches for 78 yards).
But on a night when the running attack netted only 21 yards on 21 carries, Schurr found success through the air.
Cantu (15 of 19 for 206 yards) had touchdown passes to Carlos Arredondo (five for 88 yards) and Angel Sanchez (four for 58) in the third period to wipe out El Rancho’s advantage.
Abraham Gonzalez had seven solo tackles and four assists and Christian Madrid was in on 10 tackles to lead the Schurr defense.
El Rancho finished the season 5-6.

Burbank broke a tie early in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard run by Ulises Ochoa (25 carries for 137 yards) to edge Alhambra, 21-14 in a Southeast Division opener.
The Moors (6-4) led 14-0 on an 11-yard pass from Darrian Cazarin to Brandon Wilson and a 14-yarder from Cazarin to Mitchell Crockom in the first half.
Burbank (9-2) got even by halftime on a one-yard run by Leo Rodas (13 carries for 80 yards) and a 10-yard pass from Adam Colman to Anthony Cervantes.
Cazarin was 13 of 26 for 129 yards and Crockom caught seven passes for 74 yards. Vailele Peko was the leading Alhambra rusher with 60 yards on 12 carries.
Burbank is at California (8-2-1) Friday in a second-round game. Cal advanced by routing Rowland, 55-27.

West Covina (7-4) topped San Gabriel, 40-14 in another first-round game involving an Almont League team. San Gabriel finished 6-5.
Northwest Division
Trevor Olson passed for 365 yards and three TDs to lead Cathedral (10-1) past Mary Star, 56-21 in the first round of the Northwest Division playoffs. Anthony Jefferson had two of the scoring passes and Andrew Clark got the other. Kyle Merrill had five receptions for 153 yards.
The Phantoms are at Los Padres League runner-up Pioneer Valley Friday. Pioneer Valley routed Lawndale, 59-0 Friday.
Northeast Division
Santa Fe League champion Salesian (5-6) blanked Animo Leadership, 24-0 in a Northeast Division opener.
The Mustangs now host Mojave (8-2) Friday in the second round. Mojave advanced by beating Calvary Murrieta, 36-21.
Mid Valley Division
San Marino raced past Rosemead, 42-20 in a Mid Valley Division game.
