Nothing got in the way of Norwalk High School advancing out of the first round of the CIF Southern Section Southern Division football playoffs.

That was almost literally true.

The third-seeded Lancers (10-1) piled up 515 yards on the ground, built a 50-0 lead by halftime and coasted to a 63-8 win over Rancho Alamitos (6-5) Friday.

They travel to Westminster (7-4) Friday for a second-round game that kicks off at 7:30 p.m. The Lions advanced with a 20-16 win over Irvine.

The Garden Grove League runner-up will have its hands full attempting to slow down Norwalk’s wing-T running attack. To this point, no team has had much success doing so.

Against Rancho Alamitos, the third-place team from the Garden Grove League, Elijhaa Penny rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries, Adrian Gonzales carried six times for 130 yards and one score and Davion Edwards carried seven times for 76 yards and two TDs.

Dominique Diaz attempted only one pass, completing it for a 17-yard TD to Donovan Gumbs.

Penny also led the defense with four sacks.

Westminster barely advanced, scoring the winning TD with 9.4 seconds left on a pass from Robert Camacho to Tarik Rayford from 23 yards out. The ball was tipped by a defensive back before Rayford pulled it in.

In another Southern Division opener, top-seeded Garden Grove (11-0) raced past Bellflower, 41-13.

Sean Young rushed for 134 yards and two TDs to lead the way for the Argonauts, who led, 20-6 at halftime.
Bellflower (3-8) used trickery to get on the scoreboard.

Fullback Benny Perez threw a 35-yard scoring pass to Michael Jasper off a double-reverse in the first half.

Quarterback Jeremy Allen scored on an 11-yard run in the fourth period for the Bucs. Allen was 18 of 24 for 135 yards passing.

Western Division
Jesse Callier, who had 3,000 rushing yards and 50 TDs as goals to start the season, is getting close to both.

The Warren senior rushed for 242 yards and six scores as the Bears routed West Torrance, 51-21 in a Western Division first-round game.

Heading into Friday’s second-round game at No. 4 Alemany, Callier has 2,574 yards and 44 TDs rushing. He has 45 total TDs and 236 points to rank second in the state.

Alemany (8-3) won the Mission League and routed Highland, 40-13 in the first round of the playoffs.

Warren improved to 10-1 with the victory.
