Warren High School running back Jesse Callier set enormous goals for himself entering his senior season.
While his targets of 3,000 rushing yards and 50 touchdowns seemed a bit out of reach, the University of Washngton-bound senior nearly reached them while leading the Bears to the San Gabriel Valley League title and the second round of the CIF Southern Section Western Division playoffs.
The 5-foot-11, 186-pounder capped a sensational three-year career by rushing for 3,010 yards on 300 carries (10.0 average) and 43 TDs (45 total) to earn Wave Newspapers All-East Region Player of the Year honors.
The numbers were staggering for Callier, who led the state in rushing yardage and was seventh in the nation, according to maxpreps.com. His 272 points ranked fourth in the state.
To reach those totals, he put together some remarkable single-game efforts.
A 447-yard, six-TD effort against Whittier was the best of a season that saw him rush for 251 yards and four TDs against La Serna, 257 yards and three TDs against Dominguez, 279 yards and five scores against Paramount and 292 yards and five TDs against Gahr. He capped the regular season with 277 yards and four scores against Downey, then ran for 236 yards and five TDs in a first-round playoff win over West Torrance. His season ended with a 142-yard effort in a loss to Alemany in the second round. Alemany was the only team to hold him out of the end zone all season.
That capped a career in which Callier carried 816 times for 6,529 yards and 82 TDs over three seasons. He scored 89 total TDs.
