Serra High School’s boys basketball team is testing itself against some of the best teams in the Southland. So far, it’s passing those tests with flying colors.
The Cavaliers, 18-1 heading into this week’s Del Rey League action, defeated Price, 78-75 in the fourth annual Johnnie L. Cochran Classic at LACES Saturday, then raced past Long Beach Jordan, 77-59 Monday in the MLK/Dr. Floyd Massey, Jr. Classic.
In the win over Price (16-2), the Cavaliers found themselves down by a point in the final 90 seconds. But Keith Shamburger, who scored 23 points, went 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to hold off the team from Los Angeles.
Jordan Mitchell had 12 points and Marquise Lee 11 for Serra.
California-signee Allen Crabbe led Price with 33 points. Richard Solomon added 13 points.
In Friday’s Del Rey League action, Serra (2-0 in league) routed St. Bernard, 88-44. Shamburger had 16 points.
Ocean League
A.J. Brevard and Yngwie Valdez each scored 19 points to lead Hawthorne (8-11, 1-1) to a 75-54 Ocean League victory over Beverly Hills. Brevard, a senior guard averaging 26.8 points per game, also had four rebounds and four assists.
Miles Green added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars.
Morningside 62, Culver City 56
D.J. Harris scored 21 points and Alante Young had 10 to lead Morningside (12-7, 1-1) to a 62-56 victory over Culver City in the Ocean League. Roymel Brooks added seven points for the Monarchs.
Santa Monica 67, Inglewood 58
Inglewood (9-7, 1-1) got 19 points from Jamie Harper, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 67-58 loss sto Santa Monica (12-5, 2-0).
Gerald Evans (12) and Julius Bilbrew (10) also scored in double figures for the Sentinels.
Bay League
Leuzinger 75, Palos Verdes 35
Delon Wright and Amir Garrett scored 14 points each, and Chayson Williams had 12 to lead Leuzinger (11-6, 2-0) past Palos Verdes, 75-35 in a Bay League game.
Pioneer League
Lawndale 60, South Torrance 59
Randy Beatty’s two free throws with six seconds left gave Lawndale (9-9, 1-1) a 60-59 Pioneer League victory over South Torrance. Beatty scored 23 points.
San Gabriel Valley League
Gahr 92, Dominguez 91 (OT)
Gahr rallied from six points down in the final two minutes of regulation and went on to edge Dominguez, 92-91 in overtime in a San Gabriel Valley League game.
Anthony Martinez hit a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left to send the game into overtime. The Dons led 91-90 in the extra period, but Evan Ware (34 points) scored with two seconds left to give the victory to the Gladiators.
Anthony Scott had 32 points and Dujuan Williams 20 for Dominguez.
Moore League
Allan Guei scored 23 points and Anthony January added 15 as Compton defeated Lakewood, 64-50 in a Moore League game.
Nonleague
Cliff Sims scored 27 points and Allan Guei added 17 as Compton (9-9) defeated Centennial, 67-60 Monday in the MLK/Dr. Floyd Massey, Jr. Classic.
Deonte Burton led Centennial (11-5) with 28 points.
Girls basketball
Pioneer League
North Torrance 68, Centennial 56
North Torrance extended its winning streak to 14 games with a 68-56 Pioneer League victory over Centennial Friday.
Joslyn Barnes had 20 points and 10 rebounds for North (15-1, 2-0).
Ocean League
Santa Monica 59, Inglewood 51
Santa Monica (11-5, 2-0) took over sole possession of first place in the Ocean League with a 59-51 victory over Inglewood (14-4, 1-1). A 22-13 fourth quarter was the difference for Santa Monica.
Deajanae Scurry had 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead Inglewood. Hazel Ramirez had nine points and five assists and Janelle Ross had nine points and 11 rebounds.
Culver City 59, Morningside 57
DeAndrea Toler had 17 points for Morningside (12-8, 0-2) in its loss to Culver City. Jackie Carey had 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Monarchs.
Marine League
Washington 41, Narbonne 33
Reshanda Gray scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Washington Prep (13-9, 4-0) past Narbonne, 41-33 in a Marine League game. Kiana Furlow added nine points and nine rebounds for the Generals.
Carson 55, San Pedro 23
Chante Miles scored 19 points to lead Carson (11-6, 3-1) past San Pedro, 55-23 in a Marine League game. Annie Curry added 14 points and four steals for Carson.
Coliseum League
Manual Arts 48, Jefferson 39
Jessica Thornton and Ashley Joseph scored 14 points apiece as Manual Arts (6-6, 2-1) topped Jefferson, 48-39 in a Coliseum League game. The Toilers led, 28-14 at halftime.
Crenshaw 49, Locke 37
Crenshaw (11-6, 2-1) built a 12-point lead by halftime and went on to defeat Locke, 49-37 in Coliseum League action.
Lashanaye James led Locke with 13 points.
