Montebello works overtime for victory

Montebello High School took over sole possession of first place in the Almont League boys basketball race and it needed to work overtime to do so Tuesday.

Daniel Flores’ jumper in the key with eight seconds left gave the Oilers (20-1, 3-0) the victory and a one-game lead in the standings. Keppel (15-4, 2-1) shared the top spot heading into the contest.

Keppel held a four-point lead in overtime, but Montebello stormed back to tie the score on baskets by Marcos Mejia (16 points) and 6-foot-11 Antonio Worthy (nine points, eight rebounds).

Keppel’s Sam Thim was fouled with 31 seconds left and hit one of two free throws to give the Aztecs a 59-58 lead.

Jeremy Solis led Montebello with 18 points. Andrew Torres had 10 points, 15 rebounds and six assists.

Timmy Wong paced Keppel with 22 points. His 3-point basket with 65 seconds left in regulation tied the score and sent it into overtime.

San Gabriel 62, Alhambra 43
San Gabriel (12-7, 1-2) posted its first Almont League victory in three tries with a decision over Alhambra (3-16, 0-3).

Friday’s Almont League schedule has Alhambra at Bell Gardens, San Gabriel at Keppel and Montebello at Schurr.
