Thanks to its enormous size advantage Tuesday, Montebello High School was able to pull an inside job in beating San Gabriel in Almont League boys basketball action.
Antonio Worthy, the Oilers’ 6-foot-11, 295-pound center, dominated near the basket by scoring 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting and also had seven rebounds and five blocked shots in a 62-43 victory that improved them to 24-1 overall and 7-0 in league.
Carlos Lozano, 6-8 and 335 pounds, added another two points and a rebound for Montebello.
With Worthy controlling the paint, the Oilers were able to steadily pull away, leading 11-6 after one quarter, 29-20 at halftime and 45-30 through three periods.
Andrew Torres contributed 14 points, four assists and five steals, Marcos Mejia had 12 points and six assists and Daniel Flores added 11 points and was 3-of-3 on 3-point shots for Montebello, which hosts Keppel Friday in a showdown of the league’s top two teams.
Keppel 72, Bell Gardens 60
The Aztecs (19-4, 6-1) kept pace with the league-leading Oilers by recording a 12-point victory over Bell Gardens (4-20, 3-4) Tuesday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Almont League
Alhambra 48, Schurr 43
League-leading Alhambra (18-4, 7-0) took control with a 15-5 third quarter and went on to defeat Schurr, 48-43 in an Almont League girls game.
Schurr (11-11, 4-3) was tied, 21-21 at halftime before the Moors began to pull away.
Kiana Kayoda had 15 points, five rebounds and five steals and Michele Yup had 11 points for Schurr.
Keppel 49, Bell Gardens 37
Camaryn Amimoto scored 12 points to lead Keppel (10-13, 5-2) to a 49-37 victory over Bell Gardens.
Sandra Gao had nine points and Kiley Smith seven for the Aztecs, who pulled away with a 15-7 third quarter run.
Montebello 35, San Gabriel 20
Desiree Cerda scored 19 points and Alexis Perez had nine points and nine rebounds for Montebello (6-17, 2-5) in its 35-20 victory over San Gabriel.
The Oilers outscored San Gabriel, 8-0 in the first quarter.
Camino Real League
St. Bernard 57, Cantwell SH 56 (OT)
Destini French, a 6-2 junior center, had 32 points, 19 rebounds and 10 blocked shots to lead St. Bernard to a 57-56 victory over host Cantwell Sacred Heart Tuesday in a pivotal Camino Real League game.
By virtue of their victory, the Vikings (12-14, 4-2) were able to pull into a tie for first place with Cantwell (16-8, 4-2).
Danielle Moore added 11 points and seven rebounds for St. Bernard, which got back in the game by outscoring the Cardinals 23-5 in the third quarter.
Santa Cruz League
St. Mary’s Academy 45, St. Genevieve 34
Nnedinma Ofoha had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead St. Mary’s Academy to a 45-34 victory over St. Genevieve in Santa Cruz League play. St. Mary’s is 7-10 overall, 3-3 in league.
