Westchester rolls towards top seed

Defending State Division I champion Westchester High School is likely to draw the No. 1 seed in the City Section boys basketball playoff pairings are drawn up Saturday.

Ranked 16th nationally and second in California, the Comets already had the Western League title wrapped up before Monday’s 87-73 victory over Palisades.

At 22-3 overall and 11-0 in league, they will finish the regular season with a comfortable edge over their nearest competitors — Fairfax (14-10, 7-3) and Palisades  (18-8, 7-4). They close Friday at home against University.

Against Palisades Monday, Dwayne Polee scored a season-high 32 points to lead  the way.

Coliseum League
Crenshaw, which has clinched no worse than a tie for the Coliseum League title, crushed Jefferson, 102-26 Monday.

That win puts the Cougars at 17-3 overall and 10-0 in league heading into the final two regular-season games (vs. Fremont Wednesday, Dorsey Friday).

Fremont (18-6, 9-2) and Dorsey are battling for second place.

Fremont defeated Locke, 67-60 Monday as Michael Sullivan had 17 points and nine rebounds and Kaylen Ayers added 13 points and seven rebounds. Savion Udeh (11 points) and Tim Johnson (10 points, eight assists) also scored in double figures for the Pathfinders.

Marine League
Washington Prep (17-7, 10-1) closed in on the outright Marine League title  Monday with an 85-71 victory over Gardena.

Michaelyn Scott led the Generals with 22 points. Christian Frankling paced Gardena  (15-8,  7-3) with 20 points.

Narbonne (18-8, 8-2) got 21 points and 11 rebounds from Austin Sanford  in its 56-41 victory over Carson (7-16, 4-7). Victor Robbins had 16 points for the Colts.

Eastern League
Jordan (17-9, 11-0) clinched its seventh consecutive Eastern League title Monday, but it didn’t come easy. The Bulldogs  had to struggle before holding off Garfield, 50-49.

Jordan closed the regular season Wednesday against Roosevelt.

Bell (11-10, 6-4)  defeated South Gate, 47-41 despite 18 points from David Rueda of the Rams.

Del Rey League
Serra (24-2, 7-0) got 21 points from Keith Shamburger in a 78-58 victory over Cathedral in the Del Rey League.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Ashlee Cornelious had 23 points and six rebounds and Tierra Robinson collected 15 points, 17 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead Crenshaw past Jefferson, 71-50 in the Coliseum League.

Andrea Edwards (17 points) and Samone Kelly (14 assists) also contributed to the Cougars improving to 16-8 overall and 7-3 in league.

Manual Arts (11-9, 7-3) kept pace with a 45-33 victory over Dorsey (15-12, 5-5).

Locke (7-12, 3-8) got 16 points from Kerriaun Zanders and 12 each from Destinee Thomas and Lashanaye James in a 52-42 victory over Fremont (10-11, 3-8).

Marine League
Narbonne (17-9, 7-3) split its season series with Carson by knocking off the Colts, 53-47 Monday.

Janitha Iamaleava scored 18 points and Chante Miles had 14 for Carson (17-8, 9-2).
