There are a number of lofty goals on the agenda of the Inglewood High School girls basketball team.
One is a Southern Section championship, two is a regional title and the third, of course, is the State Division 3 crown.
Considering they were runner-up in the section and state finals a year ago, the Sentinels go into this with even more motivation than might normally be expected.
As Sentinels associate head coach David Gray said following Saturday’s 63-48 semifinal victory over Bishop Amat, “The next month we’ve got some unfinished business to take care of.”
It starts Saturday at 11:15 a.m. when second-seeded Inglewood (26-5) plays top-seeded Agoura (29-0) for the Southern Section 3AA title at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid.
“Our mission is to win CIF and go back to state,” Gray said.
With the same on-court leader in point guard Hazel Ramirez still at the controls, the Sentinels can feel a certain comfort level heading into these big games.
“She’s our general,” Gray said.
Ramirez had 17 points, four assists and four steals against Amat (23-7), which struggled all night against the Sentinels quickness.
She drilled three 3-point shots, including one several feet beyond the line in which she was fouled during the third quarter. In the fourth period, she was 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Senior forward Noelini Tuiasoa, who had 16 points and 15 rebounds, and 6-1 junior Deajanae Scurry, who had 12 points and 16 rebounds, are other keys for the Sentinels.
Agoura, an 80-66 winner over Buena in the semis, is a high-powered offensive team that is led by Kylie Cunningham, Camille Mahlknecht, Brittany Oster and Sasha Borenstein.
“They shoot a lot of 3s, so we’re going to have to play good man-to-man defense,” Gray. “I think it’s going to be a good game.”
Division 5AA
Top-seeded Serra (23-7) and No. 2 Valley Christian (24-6) battle it out for the 5AA title at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Mater Dei High.
The Cavaliers, 77-57 winners over Brentwood in the semis, will have their defense tested by Valley Christian sophomore guard Kari Korver, who averages 19.2 points per game has 105 3-point baskets. Taylor Cotton (10.8) and Jelissa Holder (9.3) are other main scorers for the Crusaders., 55-48 winners over St. Paul in the semis.
Serra has balanced scoring with Talia Rayford averaging 12.9, Bria Richardson 12.7 and Raven Gammage 11.8. The Cavaliers also get production from Megan Wright and Rejanae Verine, who had 15 points each against Brentwood. Danielle Muepo is a solid rebounder.
Division 6AA
In the 6AA final, set for 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Ontario’s Colony High, top-seeded St. Bernard (18-14) and Hillcrest Christian (17-8) collide.
St. Bernard, co-champion of the Camino Real League, has an outstanding one-two punch in 6-2 junior center Destinee French, who averages 15.4 points, 18.3 rebounds and 4.6 blocked shots per game, and 5-7 freshman guard Angelica Laury, who averages 12.3 points and 5.9 assists per game. French scored 20 points and Angelica Laury had 15 for the Vikings in the semis.
Hillcrest is led by Brittany Espinoza (9.3 ppg) and Christy Corcoran (6.8).
City Section
Division I
In an all-Marine League final, Narbonne (22-9) and Carson (21-10) square off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Galen Center in the Division I championship game.
The Gauchos and Colts split their league games, so this should be close.
Narbonne, a 50-47 winner over top-seeded Taft in the semis, is ld by junior guards Tailer Butler (12.9 ppg) and Atoe Jackson (10.7).
Carson, a 44-42 semifinal winner over Marine League champion Washington Prep, has an excellent one-two punch in 6-2 junior forward Janitha Iamaleava (14.6 points, 11.8 rebounds) and junior guard Chante Miles (13.9 points, 5.7 assists).
Small Schools
In a battle of top seeds, No. 1 View Park Prep (27-5) takes on LACES (28-5) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Roybal Learning Center for the City’s Small Schools title.
Junior guard Danielle Pruitt leads View Park with averages of 15.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Sophomore Rachel Sample (11.8) and senior center Angel Smith (10.1) are the second and third leading scorers.
