All the drama was drained from this one early.
Much of the credit for that goes to Megan Wright, who drained three 3-point baskets in the first quarter, four in the first half and five for the game in leading Serra High School to a 66-47 victory over Valley Christian Friday in the Southern Section Division 5AA girls basketball title game at Mater Dei.
The hot start by Wright, who had a team-high 19 points, helped the Cavaliers (24-7) win the first section title in school history in their second appearance. They lost to Santa Maria St. Joseph in last season’s final.
Serra had a number of other contributors, notably forward Danielle Muepo (14 points, 13 rebounds), point guard Bria Richardson (10 points, eight assists, three steals) and Rejane Verin (eight points, 10 rebounds), but it was the sharp-shooting Wright who set the tone for the Cavaliers, who led, 22-6 after one quarter.
“Megan is a great 3-point shooter,” Cavaliers coach McKinsey Hadley said. “She’s played with a lot of injuries, but when she’s hot, there is not a better shooter.”
Wright only averages seven points per game, but that speaks to the depth of the Cavaliers, who only needed eight points from Talia Rayford, their leading scorer on the season.
“We’re so deep we don’t need any one player to score a lot of points,” the coach said.
Valley Christian (23-7), on the other hand, does lean heavily on one main scorer — sophomore guard Kari Korver.
Korver scored 22 points, including three NBA-length 3-pointers representative of cousin Kyle Korver of the Utah Jazz.
Controlling Korver was a priority for Hadley going into the game.
“We wanted to make sure we had a hand in her face all the time,” he said. “We really wanted to take the ball out of her hands and make other people beat us.”
Serra plays a 6 p.m. game Tuesday at City Small Schools champion LACES in the Division IV regionals.
