Salesian and Animo Leadership Charter high schools are getting closer to a rematch of last weekend’s Southern Section Division V boys soccer championship.
Each won first-round games Monday in the CIF Southern California Division III regionals. Victories in Wednesday’s semifinals puts them in the regional title game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Downey’s Warren High.
Top-seeded Salesian (21-5-2) of East L.A. easily defeated Avalon, 5-1 Monday to earn its way into the semifinals against The Bishops School of La Jolla, a 4-1 winner over Elizabeth Learning Center of Cudahy in the first round.
Inglewood-based Animo Leadership (25-6-2) blanked host Mission Prep of San Luis Obispo, 3-0 Monday to advance. Mission Prep finished the season 23-1.
Animo was paired with No. 2 Farmersville (28-1-3), the Central Section champion, in the semis.
If Salesian and Animo do wind up making the final, it would be their third meeting this year. Animo won, 1-0 in the regular season, then Salesian evened the score in the Southern Section title game, 3-0 Friday at Warren.
In that one, Jose Esperanza scored the first goal and Jovani Zayas got the next two off passes from Gerard Soto.
Division I
Paramount (24-6-3) earned its way into the Division I regionals after edging Santa Ana Valley, 2-1 in overtime to claim the Southern Section Division III crown. It was the first CIF title in school history.
Jose Ochoa scored off a corner kick from his cousin, Juan, for the first goal and David Trevino headed home Juan Ochoa’s free kick in overtime to give the Pirates the victory. Goalkeeper Tony Flores had six saves.
Santa Ana Valley (28-3-4) was ranked as high as ninth nationally and second in the state by ESPN Rise.
Girls Soccer
Division III
Flintridge Prep routed LACES, 7-0 and Francis Parker of San Diego toppled Carson-based CAMS, 4-1 Monday in the first round of the Southern Regional Division III girls playoffs.
LACES finished 8-7-2, CAMS 16-4.
