Santa Fe’s Davis is second at state finals

Santa Fe High School sophomore Joey Davis placed second in the 135-pound division at the CIF State Wrestling Championships Saturday in Bakersfield.

Impressive during his advancement to the finals in the two-day tournament at Rabobank Arena, Davis finally met his match in the finals against Central Catholic’s David Ferry of the San Jose Section. Ferry recorded a 4-2 decision in overtime.

Davis used a takedown with 10 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Then Ferry got a hold and takedown with 26 seconds left in sudden-death to get the win.

Davis was the highest finisher among area athletes, and one of the few to advance out of Friday’s preliminary rounds.

Another who did was Alhambra’s Abel Avila, who placed seventh at 140. Avila decisioned Jesse Baldazo of North Coast Section school Liberty for the spot. Avila won two of three matches Saturday.

Hugo Perez of Alhambra (103) and Richard Rios of Santa Fe (125) lost morning matches and failed to place.

Warren’s Damien Gomez closed out a season in which he went 57-3 with 44 pins with a 6-4 loss to Bakersfield’s Ian Nickell Saturday in the 103 division. Gomez went 4-2 during the tourney.

The top four spots in the team standings were taken by Central Section schools. Bakersfield won the team title with 126 points, followed by Selma with 113.5, Clovis with 97.0 and Lemoore with 94.0.
