Keppel High School saw its season end in defeat in Bakersfield Tuesday.

The Aztecs (24-7) were routed by Liberty, 69-49 in the first round of the Southern Regional Division II boys basketball playoffs.

The Central Section school (23-8) now travels to No. 1 Eisenhower (28-5) Thursday for the quarterfinals. Eisenhower had a first-round bye.

Against the Almont League school, the Patriots controlled the tempo from the start and were never tested.

Outside of an early, 5-4 lead for Keppel, it was all Liberty, which surged after that and led, 29-19 at halftime and 44-23 midway through the third quarter.

Sam Thim was outstanding for Keppel with 19 points and four 3-point baskets.

Center Justin Young added 11 points despite being plagued by foul trouble.

They were about the only two Aztecs who scored much on a night the team was only 15 of 41 from the field.

Liberty, on the other hand, hit 25 of its 43 field goal attempts.

Sam Marcus led the Patriots with 19 points and Junior Morgan added 13. Westin Hill scored 17.

In other Division II regional action Tuesday, Compton defeated San Joaquin Memorial, 67-63 and Pasadena got past L.A. University.

Compton (19-14) now travels to San Diego Hoover (27-6) Thursday in the semifinals. Hoover, the No. 4 seed, defeated Damien to advance.

Winners of Thursday’s games advance to the regional semis Saturday. The regional finals are March 20 at USC’s Galen Center. The state championships are March 26-27 in Bakersfield.
