Centennial rallies to beat Orange Lutheran

Centennial High School’s state title hopes were in jeopardy for a half Thursday.

Then the Apaches awoke after a sluggish first 16 minutes and rallied for a 75-69 victory over visiting Orange Lutheran in the quarterfinals of the Southern Regional Division III boys basketball playoffs.

Deonte Burton scored 28 points and Kevin Smith added 26 to help Centennial (27-6) to come back from a 42-30 deficit at the break.

The Apaches host Gahr at 7 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals. Gahr held off Foothill, 81-78 to advance.

A 23-10 third quarter enabled Centennial to take a lead into the final period. The Apaches went on a 10-3 run to start the fourth and take command.

Orange Lutheran (24-9) wasn’t through.

Gabe York (29 points) scored seven of the Lancers’ next nine points to give the visitors a 68-67 lead with 1:25 left.

After Orange Lutheran tied the score at 69, Smith gave the lead back to the Apaches with 34 seconds left.

Burton then stole the ball from Tyler Funk and scored on a layup to give Centennial a four-point advantage.

Serra 56, Ridgeview 46
Keith Shamburger scored 23 points, including the first nine of the game, to lead top-seeded Serra (31-2) to a 56-46 victory over Bakersfield Ridgeview (25-6) in the Division III regionals.

Marqise Lee added 12 points for the Cavaliers, who face Ocean View at El Camino College Saturday in the regional semifinals. Ocean View (29-4) advanced with a 65-53 victory over Verdugo Hills.

Division II
Compton 69, S.D. Hoover 53

Allan Guei scored 20 points and Dazjae Hill added 15 to lead Compton (20-14) to a 69-53 victory over San Diego Hoover (27-7) in the Division II regionals.

Cliff Sims Jr. added 13 points for the Tarbabes, who play at top-seeded Eisenhower (29-5) Saturday. Eisenhower defeated Bakersfield Liberty, 76-57.

Division IV
Price 68, Oaks Christian 40

Point guard Casey Trujeque scored 12 of his 16 points in the third quarter to help top-seeded Price (30-3) take command in a 68-40 rout of Oaks Christian in the Division IV regionals.

With the Montana State-bound Trujeque leading the way, the Knights were able to extend a six-point halftime lead to 15 entering the fourth period.

Allen Crabbe had nine points, while Richard Solomon and Skylar Spencer had eight each.

Price hosts Pacific Hills Satuarday in the semis. Pacific Hills advanced with a 46-42 victory over Notre Dame.

Division I
Taft 66, Leuzinger 63

Bryce Jones hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to give Taft a 66-63 victory over Leuzinger in the Division I regionals.

DeAndre Daniels added 23 points for the Toreadors (26-5), who play at No. 1 Mater Dei Saturday.

Delon Wright had 16 points and Amir Garrett 14 for Leuzinger (25-8).

Westchester 73, Santa Monica 64
Jordin Mayes scored 20 points and Dwayne Polee added 17 as No. 2 Westchester (29-3) held off stubborn Santa Monica, 73-64. Kareem Jamar added 14 points for the Comets, who host Long Beach Poly Saturday.

GIRLS REGIONALS
Division III
Inglewood 46, Muir 41

Ryann Drear scored nine points on three 3-pointers, two in the fourth quarter, to lift Inglewood (28-5) past Muir, 46-41 in the Division III regionals.

Hazel Ramirez had nine points and Dejanae Scurry eight for the Sentinels, who play at second-seeded Mt. Miguel of Spring Valley (San Diego). Mt. Miguel defeated Barstow, 64-40 Thursday.

Division V
St. Bernard 60, Christian Life Acad. 45

Angelica Laury led the Vikings with 22 points and Ajai Ford added 14 points. Gabrielle Adoh scored 11 points for St. Bernard (20-14), which plays at top-seeded St. Anthony (23-9) in the semifinals Saturday.

View Park Prep 69, Vincent Memorial 30
View Park Prep (29-6) routed Vincent Memorial of Calexico, 69-30 in the Division V quarters.

View Park now faces Montclair Prep at Crenshaw Saturday.

Division IV
La Jolla Country Day 72, Serra 59

The season ended for Serra (25-8) with a 72-59 loss to La Jolla Country Day.
