Two weeks after losing to Serra High School in the Southern Section Division III-A title game, Centennial gets its chance for revenge.
The stakes are even higher this time around since a trip to next week’s State Division III boys basketball title game rests on Saturday’s Southern Regional finals outcome. Serra defeated Centennial, 62-58 in the section final at Honda Center.
Top-seeded Serra advanced with a 50-45 victory over Ocean View at El Camino College, while Centennial earned its way into the final with an 83-77 victory over Gahr.
The regional finale is noon Saturday at USC’s Galen Center.
Against Ocean View, Craig Carter’s 3-point basket with 40 seconds left broke a tie and sent the Cavaliers (32-2) on their way to victory. Keith Shamburger’s free throw tied the score.
Ocean View erased an early nine-point Serra lead with an 18-0 run that put the Seahawks ahead by nine late in the third quarter.
Marqise Lee had 15 points and Shamburger added 12 for Serra.
Anthony Brown led Ocean View (29-5) with 17 points.
Centennial (28-6) got 34 points from Deonte Burton in its semifinal victory over Gahr. Burton was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line and hit three 3-point baskets.
Kurt Davis had 17 points, while David Turner and Keith Smith added six each for the Apaches.
Centennial was 25-for-28 from the foul line.
Division II
Compton 64, Eisenhower 61
Compton (21-14) stunned top-seeded Eisenhower, 64-61 in the Division II regional semifinals Saturday.
The Tarbabes now face San Diego Lincoln, an 81-45 winner over Pasadena, in the regional final at 4 p.m. Saturday at Galen Center.
When Bryan Bock’s 3-point shot bounced off the rim with a second left, Compton was able to avenge a 69-48 loss to Eisenhower Dec. 26 at the Maxpreps Holiday Classic.
They will be taking on a Lincoln team that is 27-2 and seeded second in the division. Compton is the fifth seed.
Division I
Westchester 67, Long Beach Poly 53
It will be a dream matchup for the Division I regional title when No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 2 Westchester collide at 8 p.m. Saturday at Galen Center.
Westchester (30-3) overcame a seven-point halftime lead for Poly (28-5) by going on a 15-4 third quarter run.
Dwayne Polee scored 22 points, Kareem Jamar had 12 and Reggie Murphy 11 to lead the Comets. Jordin Mayes added 10. Polee took over in the third quarter, enabling Westchester turn an eight-point deficit into a lead.
A 3-point play by Polee and a 3-point basket by Jamar were the big plays during the comeback.
Robert Nixon Jr. led Poly with 11 points and Ryan Anderson had 10.
The Comets face a Mater Dei (32-1), which barely held off Taft, 75-73 Saturday. Taft was runner-up to Westchester for the City Section title.
