Besides three touchdowns from Marvin Hall and three scoring passes from Joseph Gray, the best thing about Wednesday for Dorsey High School was that it was playing an actual game.
Dons coach Paul Knox said it was getting old banging heads in practice and scrimmaging against each other, so the opportunity to go out and face another opponent was refreshing.
Despite inconsistencies normal for an opening game, Dorsey cruised to a 41-0 victory at North Hollywood.
“We had some explosive plays, but made a lot of mistakes,” Knox said. “But this was a first game and so many of my guys haven’t played varsity before. You never know how they’re going to react. It was just good to get out there and play a game.”
The Dons were barely tested by a team that went 1-9 and scored only 56 points a year ago.
Hall, a returning wide receiver and returner, hauled in 52- and 40-yard scoring passes and returned a punt 86 yards for another TD. He also had a 60-yard punt return for a TD wiped out by a penalty.
“Marvin came through during the summer passing leagues and did a lot of good things for us,” Knox said.
Gray, one of the City’s top returning quarterbacks, completed six of 12 for 151 yards and the three scores, but was also intercepted once. Keith Lakey was on the receiving end of the first TD pass, a 24-yarder.
“He should have completed more of his passes and there was that pick,” the coach said. “I was disappointed with that because you’ve got to take care of the ball.”
Backup quarterback Steven Smith completed the scoring for Dorsey with a 30-yard run at the 8:13 mark of the fourth quarter.
A downside was the hip injury suffered by tailback Robby Gasaway on his one-yard scoring run in the first quarter.
Knox said he was unsure of the severity of the injury to Gasaway, who was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
The Dons also played without all-league wide receiver Jaydon Mickens, who was nursing a groin injury. Knox expects him back for the next game.
Dorsey returns to action next Thursday against Taft at Rancho Cienega Park.
Jefferson 39, Fremont 6
Davion Roberts carried seven times for 178 yards and scored three TDs and Juan Carter carried four times for 100 yards and scored once Jefferson pounded Fremont, 39-6 in the season opener for both school.
Jefferson, playing a home game under the lights for the first time in school history, also got a TD from Terry Brady (six carries, 57 yards).
Timothy Luscious led the defense with 16 tackles. Marcus Stamps had 10 tackles and three sacks. Brady had an interception.
